Many individuals with autism experience GI challenges—such as constipation, diarrhoea, reflux, and food intolerances—that can significantly affect behaviour, learning, and overall well-being. Understanding how these issues contribute to irritability, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and difficulty concentrating can help us guide treatment and develop effective strategies for symptom relief.

Monthly Learning Series: February The Monthly Learning Series on GI will focus on the critical connection between gastrointestinal (GI) health and autism. Many individuals with autism experience GI issues that can significantly impact behavior, learning, and overall quality of life. We’ll delve in...

The Missing Piece in Understanding PANDAS and PANS?

What If Everything We Thought About PANDAS Was Wrong? For years, scientists have debated how infections can trigger autoimmune diseases. The most widely accepted theory has been molecular mimicry, the idea that certain bacteria and viruses resemble human cells so closely that the immune system gets....

Pica is the persistent eating or chewing of items that are not typically considered food and lack significant nutritional value. Common examples include chewing on ice, hair, dirt, paper, books, or even faeces.

This behaviour is quite common in kids with autism. However, it is crucial to address and stop this behaviour, as it can lead to severe health issues. Consuming non-food items is inherently unhealthy and, when pica is long-term, it can result in bowel obstruction, blockages, and even toxicity. Therefore, it's important to investigate the possible reasons behind this behaviour and seek appropriate treatment.

Recent research has highlighted the significant role of the immune system in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies have shown that immune dysfunction is a key area of concern in many autism cases. In 2022, a study revealed that individuals with autism might have upregulated immune genes, leading to brain inflammation. Further research in 2023 found an altered cytokine profile in adult patients with autism compared to a control group, suggesting immune dysregulation in a subset of adults with ASD.

Additionally, new studies indicate that maternal immune dysregulation is a prenatal risk factor for ASD. This means that inflammation and metabolic stress on the pregnant mother can cause abnormal cytokine signalling and autoimmunity, potentially leading to the development of autism in the child.

These findings underscore the importance of understanding immune system involvement in autism and open new avenues for potential therapeutic interventions.

A mast cell is a type of white blood cell that is found in connective tissues all over the body, including under the skin, near blood and lymph vessels, and in the nerves, lungs, and intestines. We mainly think of mast cells when referring to something we are allergic to, but they do a lot more. Mast cells in the body are part of the immune system and orchestrate its responses. Most importantly, mast cell disorders have increasingly been tied to autism.
