We all have different ways of coping with stress and anxiety. Stress awareness day, that took place on Wednesday this week, was originally conceived to raise awareness of the effects of psychological distress in the workplace and strategies to address it. For some, the pandemic has added a number of new considerations that have been sources of stress. Many more people are working from home with an increase in people reporting to feel under constant pressure. If not managed this can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, depression and physical health problems. A study published in the medical journal The Lancet found causes of anxiety disorder went up by 25% worldwide and depressive disorders increased by 27.6%. The study found a clear correlation between the pandemic outbreak and increases in the two disorders and most likely accounts for the rise in people experiencing a first psychotic episode as recently reported. There is no doubt stress is a serious business. As we are about to start a new working week try and take some time for yourself. Our Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Pradeep Grewal Bsc.,MBBS, MSc., FRCPsych has put together a guide with exercises and tips for anyone suffering stress.
