“Hospitals can be scary and seeing the experiences of young people and staff is so welcoming and normalising for people coming to and working in our services.” 💬

Dr Jaxon Kramer works at Wandsworth CAMHS, where a beautiful new mural is brightening the space and helping to create a welcoming and friendly environment for everyone 🎨

The mural has been created by a talented group of young service users, staff, and artist Shiza Naveed, who came together to explore mental health and personal stories through art.

This week our Recovery College has been hosting an art exhibition featuring the work of Owen Reilly, one of our peer trainers 🤝

Art has always been Owen’s way of expressing himself. From a young age, he found comfort and focus in drawing, which helped him develop his skills and communicate his thoughts and feelings. Today, his work reflects themes of resilience, hope and the ongoing journey of recovery.

Owen joined the Recovery College as a student in 2015 and now supports others by sharing his lived experience, helping people explore what recovery could look like for them. Visit the college's website to learn more about the work they do: www.swlstg.nhs.uk/recovery-college

The artwork will remain on display for several weeks for those who would still like to visit!

A beautiful new mural has brightened up Wandsworth CAMHS 🎨

It’s been created by a talented group of young service users, staff, and artist Shiza Naveed, who came together to explore mental health and personal stories through art.

During the workshops, Shiza invited people to paint, draw or use pastels on individual hexagon tiles, exploring themes such as nature, identity, places of comfort and community, windows into other worlds, and words of affirmation.

The result is a vibrant collection of abstract shapes, landscapes and meaningful messages – each piece unique and personal.

Shiza shared: “I just want to say thank you so much for coming to the sessions, and for being so bold and brave, both in everything that you were sharing, but also with everything that you were doing on the canvases. I hope you feel proud looking at your work.”

This mural is part of Culturally Mindful, a creative health residency programme in partnership with Wandsworth London Borough of Culture.

We’re proud to have received funding from NHS Charities Together and NHS to deliver a new programme of culturally sensitive, trauma informed psychological support for our Black, Asian and ethnic minority staff.

The programme responds to clear evidence that Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues – who make up around 75% of our frontline workforce – experience disproportionately high levels of racial abuse, harassment and violence, with significant impacts on wellbeing.

💬 Our Chief Executive, Vanessa Ford MBE, said: “We want South West London and St George’s to be a place where everyone feels they belong and is safe to bring their whole selves to work. Our diverse workforce is one of our major strengths, though sadly we know many of our frontline colleagues experience racial discrimination and abuse when they are supporting the communities we serve.

“We are committed to becoming an actively anti-racist organisation, and by providing culturally sensitive, trauma informed support, this new programme will ensure that help is on hand for any of our Black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues who are subject to racial abuse.”

When our staff feel safe, respected and supported, they’re better able to thrive – strengthening the care we provide to our communities 💙
