Giving myself permission to pause this morning!

The start of school has been so much admin and travels drama on top of a full work schedule that today when I unexpectedly have a clear morning after school drop off I decided to do a bit of ā€˜nothing’!

So I’m sitting having my coffee and pastry treat, listening to bird song, watching the trees sway in the breeze, enjoying warm September sunshine and soothing my nerves.

Because life is challenging, and there is so much around us designed to make us feel anxious, outraged, scared, upset, ashamed, that we’re not good enough, successful enough, fit enough, happy enough, thinking the right thoughts or doing enough to save the world.

Stop the noise! šŸ™‰

If we want peace and happiness it starts with us. As the famous quote from Ghandi says - be the change you want to see in the world.

The more unsettled things feel, the more we need to pause, take a breath and get grounded. Be more tree! 🌳

I believe being a calm presence in the world does make a difference. When we are centred and calm we are much more able to think clearly, make good decisions, less likely to be triggered, and more in touch with our intuition. It changes how we see and experience the world around us and in turn, improves the quality of our interactions with others.

If you are feeling edgy, stressed and worried about the future - I totally understand. This isn’t about denying reality but trying to find a way to keep a cool head in a crisis, to avoid making decisions from a place of fear or anger.

So I’m inviting you to give yourself permission to do something everyday that soothes your nerves. It can feel ā€˜unproductive’ but is so necessary.

You may also like to get some deep relaxation with reflexology or restorative yoga. Info & booking links are available in my bio. ā¤ļø

I had a lovely walk over the heath today with my daughter who came with me on my usual commute to teach my yoga for cancer classes at .

Coming back afterwards we had time to explore and stop to notice the subtle changes of the season, the trees are still lush and green; we enjoyed the late summer sun and I discovered these unusual mushrooms encircling one tree. They are the size of large cabbages! (Do you know what they are, I’d love to know their name?!)

For me seeing more fungus in the woods is a sign that Autumn is on its way and I’ve been feeling the internal pull to prepare for the next phase by making a more cosy and beautiful work space at home, decluttering, simplifying and making life easier (in theory!)

Next week is back to school and it’s made me rethink my own routine too. There is definitely some self care improvements to be made and I need to give myself more free time to be creative.

What would you like to change about your weekly schedule? What would you add and what would you like to drop?

I can’t help you declutter your house, but if you’re looking to have some regular yoga or reflexology then I’m here for you!

Simply drop me a DM and let me know what you need and we can take it from there.

Taking a few days away with my daughter in my home county of Sussex - this time we have rented a gorgeous shepherds hut near the South Downs; our own little escape to the country! This morning was breakfast on the veranda with local eggs and a walk through the fields where we found the best blackberries! I can’t believe it’s only another week until school starts - where has the time gone?! What are your plans this bank holiday?

A little bit of happiness on the way home from work today!

I am almost a month into my gratitude practise and am enjoying the subtle shifts.

It’s so easy to be caught up in our problems that we forget to notice the good stuff that can bring joy. Like having this joyful public art by on the bridge near my clinic!

I was talking to a client today who has also made a decision to shift her mindset away from focusing only on her health problems as she finds it starts to spiral into more depressive thoughts and beliefs. She spoke of being at a retreat and a severely disabled man in an electric wheelchair was the happiest person there. It made her pause to think about her attitude to her own problems.

I suggested that ā€˜and’ is a great word - tiny but powerful!

I never want to encourage people to gaslight themselves with toxic positivity, to pretend their pain or problems aren’t real. Or to try and rank their problems alongside other people’s. But at the same time we need to balance that recognition of suffering with recognising all the good we have too:

I have pain AND I am loved
I am worried AND I have enough food to eat
It’s been a hard day AND the sun is shining making everything look beautiful
I don’t know what to do AND right now I am safe

We can’t wait for all our problems to be solved before we are happy - we need to find the happy along the way in amongst the messy difficulties of life!

What things make you smile?

Today I start a 90 day gratitude practise.

This is not about denying reality, of course challenges still exist, but about deeply appreciating what I already have, recognising what I have already been gifted in this life. This is part of a process to make life more nervous system friendly so that I enjoy it more and show up as a better version of myself to my loved ones and in my work.

I am grateful for so many big things, my daughter, my home, my family and friends, having meaningful work that pays the bills, living in a country where I as a woman am free to make my own life choices.

I am also grateful for the small magical things too, like these yellow poppies that have bloomed in my garden this week. I grew them from seed and wasn’t sure if anything would happen and now bright bold blooms! There is so much symbolism with this and it’s a daily reminder that sometimes things do work out even if you have doubts, so long as you take the necessary action and leave the rest to nature.

What simple things are you grateful for today? Share in the comments below ā¤ļø

As you may know I have a weekly walk over Hampstead Heath as part of my self care routine. I do it every week come ice, wind, rain or shine!

🌼Every season brings its own beauty and its own challenges. Right now pollen is a big one!! But, I don’t want to miss out on walks in nature especially as the weather has been amazing.

🧣A simple solution I have found for walking is to simply pop a light scarf over my nose and mouth and hold it in place with my glasses. The combination seems to make a great barrier. For me it makes a huge difference in symptoms - it’s easy, free and uses no drugs. (antihistamines don’t agree with me unfortunately).

ā˜€ļøWhat do you find works for you? Are you enjoying the outdoors right now?

🦶Also, if you’d like some extra support for your hayfever symptoms, reflexology can help calm your system, ease your sinus congestion and support better sleep.

You can book online or get in touch to discuss your needs.

Wow here we are in May already, and what a glorious start to the month! I took this photo on my walk over where the bluebells are out in full bloom.

Seeing how full and abundant nature is right now is a good reminder that despite alarming news, if we go outside and connect with nature not only does it soothe our nervous systems but also shows us how much and beauty there is, how much the earth freely provides for us all.

I know the term ā€˜gratitude’ is often overused and suggested at inappropriate times these days, but I do find the concept of giving thanks for small (or big) things can really help shift our thinking into more balanced perspective. It’s not to deny the challenges but to recognise the good stuff too!

This month my challenge to you is to journal as many different endings as possible to the sentence ā€œI’m so lucky becauseā€¦ā€. Nothing is too small or large to include and I’d love to read some of yours in the comments ā¤ļø

Try doing some everyday for the whole month and see what happens! And if you want to feel extra extra lucky you can book yourself some reflexology with me too! 😁 (link in bio)

Catching some windy sun and sea over the weekend. I love connecting with my roots and nature - nothing like some sea air to blow the cobwebs away!

I really enjoyed taking some time off over easter and am trying to maintain a better balance of indoor/outdoor living. This of course is so much easier in this nicer weather with some lovely days spent gardening or going out to the countryside; but even for work I try to walk on phone calls, do some reading in the garden.

Humans evolved living outdoors for the majority of time, mostly only going inside to sleep. Obviously that is not so practical these days! But it is helpful to think about ways you can be outdoors more. Real sunlight is so much better for our brain and our mood than electric, fresh air is better for our immunity and sleep and our bodies are designed to move regularly!

Some ideas for getting outside:

Morning coffee in the garden/balcony
Walk some of the way to work and home
Take lunch break outside (ideally get your feet on some grass!)
Exercise outside instead of the gym
Wild swimming!
Take the kids to the park
Local sightseeing
Go to a market rather than a mall (if you have one nearby)
Explore local green spaces

What would you add to the list?

Just to let you all know that I’m talking a dose of my own medicine and having a week off over the Easter break! I’m so loving the spring sunshine! I had my lunch break outside in the mews today to soak up some rays and top up my vitamin D

I’m also loving getting a pair of my favourite shoes back out again. For those who know me, you’ll know I pretty much live in my Vivobarefoot shoes and boot year round. My walking boots have been taking me over the heath every week and I’ve loved having my winter boots for work. But now they get to come out and play 😊

Why do I love barefoot shoes?

They are the most comfortable I’ve ever worn, I can walk all day in them and not feel the need to take them off as soon as I get home.

They are foot shaped and allow your toes to spread and move as they ought. Regular shoes force your big toe sideways and scrunch your toes together.

They are thin flexible soles to allow your foot to mould around the surface you walk on and actually feel the floor. This increases our proprioception and in turn our body awareness and balance.

Healthy strong and flexible feet help us move through the world more easily and stay active as we get older.

If you’d like some hands on work on your feet book yourself some reflexology, and if you’d like to learn exercises to improve foot mobility then try some yoga with me!

You can book both online via the link in bio. Or contact me direct for home visits.

I love Spring! After walking over the heath all through winter I feel well rewarded by the signs of spring - tender blossoms and sweet green leaves. It is a reminder to have hope, that winter doesn’t last forever, even though at times it feels like does.

My yoga practise has helped me develop a more mindful approach to life. What we learn on the mat is often a metaphor for other aspects of life.

Nothing stays the same forever, change is inevitable. Remembering this helps me not cling too tightly to sadness or joy. At their height it can feel as though this is all there is and will always be but knowing they are passing through can help us be present in the moment.

For sadness, just allowing the emotion to express itself and move through can help it pass quicker. Trying to push difficult feelings away often intensifies them.

For joy, knowing this too is passing through can remind us to really be in the moment and soak it all up. To not take things for granted. Equally if we try to hold joy too tightly through fear of loss, it can diminish the experience.

So for now I am cherishing these spring blooms in their full fresh beauty, knowing they will not last but that something else wonderful will follow.

If you’d like to practise yoga with me, I offer personalised one to one classes in person and online. Get in touch and we can chat about your needs and goals, or simply book in online.
