BIMA's statement on proposed GMC Regulatory Reforms

Published: 24th March 2026

BIMA is reviewing the Government’s proposed reforms to the GMC following the Lord Mann review into racism in the NHS. While we strongly support action to tackle discrimination and misconduct, we have concerns that some proposals may undermine fairness, proportionality, and due process, and note the absence of explicit attention to Islamophobia despite rising concerns. We are also concerned about potential impacts on legal certainty and free expression within the NHS.

BIMA will continue engaging with stakeholders and exploring all appropriate routes to ensure the final framework is fair, balanced, and effective for both patients and doctors.
