This Deaf Awareness Week, we’re supporting the theme “Right to understand – Together, we break barriers.”

It highlights the importance of equal access to communication, creating a more inclusive society, and recognising the needs of deaf children and their families.

Hearing loss in childhood can impact communication, learning, and social development - but with early identification and the right support, every child can fully access education and opportunity.

Simple changes, greater awareness, and inclusive communication - including the use of British Sign Language (BSL) where appropriate - can make a meaningful difference.

Hearing loss isn’t always visible.
And it isn’t the same for everyone.

This Deaf Awareness Week “Right to understand – Together, we break barriers” highlights the importance of recognising these differences - and the impact they can have on everyday life.

By challenging assumptions and improving how we communicate, we can create a more inclusive world for people with hearing loss.
