Read more on the BBC regarding the recent NICE review of 'life changing' allergy treatment Acarizax. With comment from the brilliant .

Acarizax is for the treatment of house dust mite allergies. It is a small tablet placed under the tongue, taken once a day. It is an immunotherapy medication which aims to desensitise the immune system to a particular allergen and therefore reduce the severity of allergic symptoms over time.

The benefits often last for years and it is particularly useful as an advanced treatment for allergy sufferers whose symptoms persist despite regular antihistamines and/or nasal sprays.

House dust mite allergies are very common and symptoms (usually perennial) can be quite troublesome. Whilst they can never be eliminated entirely, there are mitigation measures that you can make for your home to ease discomfort.
In the event that a more definitive treatment is needed, immunotherapy is available.

Reported incidents involving allergies, including anaphylaxis, have increased dramatically in recent years.

Reassuringly, the rate of fatality from anaphylaxis has not followed the same trend. Instead it has stayed more or less constant at 0.047 cases per 100,00 (Turner PJ et al, 2015).

The reasons for the discrepancy could be due to increased awareness of the condition, or perhaps improvement in medical care - including improved diagnosis, better access to adrenaline autoinjectors etc.

Urticaria (an itchy rash) is a prevalent condition affecting 1 in 5 people at some point in their lifetime.

It can have a variety of causes - sometimes it's an acute reaction upon exposure to a food (or other allergen). And sometimes the cause is more complex.

If you are concerned about this condition, or have any queries and want to discuss further, please feel free to give us a call

There are so many products on market - particularly IgG tests - which claim to give a quick, affordable answer to allergies or intolerances.
The trouble is, they don't work.

These 'alternative tests' have no scientific validity, and are not capable of accurately diagnosing the problem.

You may wonder - ok they don't work, but is there a harm?

And the answer, sadly, is yes - they can be quite harmful. When a patient arranges a food allergy/intolerance test for themselves, or their child, and the results come back warning them to avoid X, Y or Z food groups, patients often embark or strict elimination diets in their quest for better health.

The trouble with eliminating multiple food groups from your diet (particularly with children) is that it can lead to nutritional deficiencies. This can cause bone density problems, malnutrition or even long-forgotten problems like scurvy!

Furthermore, once a food has been eliminated from your diet, it can be more tricky and troublesome to reintroduce as your body's tolerance to that food will have reduced. This can actually put you at a higher risk of having a reaction.

Elimination diets should not be completely dismissed, and they can be a useful tool for healthcare professionals. However, it is so important to have proper guidance from a specialist rather than attempting a DIY approach.

A healthy, balanced diet is so important. Don't let unproven, unreliable tests get in the way of that.
