A major new review published in BJU International highlights additional treatment options, lifestyle measures, and emerging monitoring tools that may support men with early prostate cancer who are managed through active surveillance. Three of the review’s authors are UCLH consultants (pictured), contributing expert insight into how care may continue to evolve.

The review emphasises three essential steps for men on active surveillance:
• Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
• Having regular PSA tests and MRI when recommended
• Talking through any additional treatments they are considering with their specialist team

These evidence based approaches can help patients feel confident and informed as they navigate their care.

Congratulations to Professor Charles Swanton on being awarded this year’s Sjöberg Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his groundbreaking work on how tumours evolve, which is helping to explain why cancer treatments sometimes fail and paving the way for more precise, personalised therapies.

Happy Birthday UCL! 🎂

Today, UCL begins a year of celebration to mark its bicentenary. It was on this very date 200 years ago that the title deeds of settlement for the university were signed and it was established as the UK’s first secular alternative to the established religious universities.

UCLH chief executive David Probert said: “We are immensely proud of our special relationship with UCL and we value our colleagues and friends in their endeavour to show that knowledge, and innovation can serve as a force for good in the world.

"We hope to use the bicentennial year to come together with colleagues across our partnership to build on this important work and shape an even better future."

Improving early diagnosis of cancer is one of the key goals of the National Cancer Plan. We provide Lung Cancer Screening for eligible residents in North Central London.

Since the programme started, we have detected over 250 lung cancers, and around 200 of those at stage I or II.

Our focus is on continually improving and ensuring we reach members of the population who may have difficulty accessing the service or who are traditionally underserved, such as people experiencing homelessness and people with a learning disability.

We are pleased to see our successful REACH-U pilot featured in the National Cancer Plan.

A non-clinical “buddy” supports men of African and Caribbean heritage through their treatment journey for prostate . Black men are twice as likely to be diagnosed with—and die from—prostate cancer compared to other ethnic groups.

Culturally sensitive conversations help to ease anxieties, dispel myths, and support informed decision-making about treatment. Feedback from both patients and clinicians has been overwhelmingly positive.

The programme will be expanded, with support from the North Central London Cancer Alliance, to offer this support earlier at diagnostic sites across North Central London, from the time of a patient’s referral.
