Robin’s incredible recovery from Shoulder Pain to Shoulder Gains!⁠

He’d been trying out rehab exercises but they were taking up a lot of his time and he wasn’t seeing any results.⁠

He wanted to get back to lifting heavy again, making progress and hitting PBs without worrying about making the pain worse.⁠

He didn’t want to stop training or be told that his sport was dangerous and he had to stop.⁠

So he reached out to me.⁠

One of the first breakthrough moments for him was his Assessment, step 1 of the 4-Step Strong method.⁠

We found that his shoulder mobility was 17cm less than it should have been.⁠

This meant that the front of his shoulder was getting overloaded with too much stress whenever he went overhead.⁠

His muscle endurance was also 50% of what it should have been.⁠

So in step 2 we focussed his Performance Programme on addressing his ROM and endurance of the shoulder.⁠

And after just 6 weeks we’d already got his full range of motion back (without any stretching or foam rolling).⁠

And now he’s snatching 40kg and jerking 70kg with no problems...⁠

He’s feeling more confident and he’s not worried about hurting himself even though the weights are going up every session!⁠

How Your Friends Can Reduce Your Pain.⁠

Last weekend I spent some quality time with friends and family.⁠

It’s easy to get caught up in the rat race and the things that you think are important (your career or business)…⁠

But the things that really matter are deep and meaningful relationships.⁠

It’s one of the reasons why getting injured is so difficult…⁠

If you get hurt, your relationships are going to be affected in some way.⁠

Whether it’s getting short and snappy at your partner because you’re frustrated (guilty)…⁠

Or the fact that you can’t train with your friends anymore…⁠

Or even worse having to watch them hit PBs while you’re sitting it out on the sidelines.⁠

And we know that this social aspect of life can have a big influence on your pain.⁠

So whether you’re in pain right now or not…⁠

You’ve probably been told before that poor form causes injuries right?⁠

Maybe you even believed them…⁠

I used to think that poor form was the cause of my back pain.⁠

That I was deadlifting wrong and that’s what caused me to keep hurting it.⁠

Then when I was studying physio I was sitting in a lecture on back pain.⁠

I suggested that we should tell people to lift with proper technique when they have pain and use their legs.⁠

“No”⁠

Said the lecturer…⁠

“Technique doesn’t prevent injury” she said.⁠

WTF…⁠

I’d been told for years that poor form would get me hurt…⁠

And now I was being told the opposite.⁠

And I couldn’t believe it.⁠

So I did a little digging into the research and I was SHOCKED by what I found.⁠

There isn’t strong evidence for the fact that poor form causes injuries.⁠

In fact there are many more factors that have a much bigger impact, like:⁠

How much weight the person was lifting⁠

If their body was strong enough to lift the weight⁠

How well they’re sleeping⁠

How stressed they are⁠

How well their mental health is⁠

Saying that injuries are caused by poor form is an over simplification of the problem.⁠

Form is just 1 small piece of the puzzle.⁠

If you want to prevent yourself from getting lifting injuries - stop worrying about your form.⁠

Most people do it wrong, they spend a ton energy worrying about⁠

The tiniest bit of butt wink.⁠

Their knees caving.⁠

Their back rounding 1 milimeter on their deadlift.⁠

Limiting how much they lift, trying to perfect their form on every rep.⁠

Because they think it will stop them from getting hurt.⁠

Hint: it won’t.⁠

If you want to prevent injuries, you need to focus on what actually matters.⁠

Improving your recovery by improving your mental health, sleep, stress and nutrition.⁠

And lay the foundation for you to recover from your training and make incredible gains.⁠

Someone has probably told you before to stretch so you don't get hurt, right?⁠

Follow for more injury prevention tips.

And you probably believed them. ⁠

Maybe even tried to do it?⁠

Which is a shame because injuries happen when the stress on your body is bigger than your bodies capacity to handle stress.⁠

So if you want to reduce your chances of getting hurt in the future...⁠

You need to decrease the amount of stress on your body...⁠

Or increase your bodies capacity to handle stress...⁠

And stretching does neither. ⁠

Now what if I told you you didn’t need to stretch and instead you just needed to get stronger.⁠

Just like my client Ash who deadlifted a PB with no back pain without having to stretch ONCE!⁠

My Foot Hurt So Bad I Felt Like I Was Walking On Glass.⁠

Every step was excruciating.⁠

I was limping like I was an old man.⁠

And at first I couldn’t work out why.⁠

Was it because I slept funny, because I’d had bad technique on one of my lifts or because of some kind of imbalance?⁠

Then I realised…⁠

On Tuesday I had a stress test for my heart.⁠

I had to run on a treadmill while they increased the speed and incline…⁠

Until I reached 100% of my HR max.⁠

For context, I hate running.⁠

And I haven’t run since I quit CrossFit in 2014 (trading it for weightlifting so I could sit down more often 😉️).⁠

So this was a massive change to my usual training.⁠

I was doing something I hadn’t done in years, and I went to failure.⁠

Most people think that their injuries are because of some kind of problem with their body.⁠

And don’t get my wrong, there are a few times where that is the problem.⁠

But for the majority of lifters, the problem has come because they have overloaded their body with stress from their training programme…⁠

Whether they realise it or not.⁠

Just like me overdoing it with the running.⁠

So if you want to figure out why you’re hurt.⁠

So many lifters that we speak to don’t know what the cause of their pain is.⁠

They’re worried about making it worse…⁠

Doing permanent damage…⁠

Or having to stop training 😢️⁠

Because they don’t know what’s useful to improve the pain…⁠

And what they shouldn’t be doing to make it worse.⁠

Some of these lifters have even already seen a healthcare professional…⁠

And they still don’t know what’s going on.⁠

So the first thing we do with every lifter that we work with is their Data Driven Assessment.⁠

We test their range of motion, strength, endurance and power to find out what the root cause of the injury is…⁠

What’s the area of weakness that has led to them having a higher chance of getting injured…⁠

And is limiting their progress in their training.⁠

And we do all of the tests objectively…⁠

Meaning we use numbers and data to back up all of the assessments.⁠

When we have your numbers, we take them and compare them to the numbers from the research.⁠

To identify what’s the root cause of the injury.⁠

And design your Performance Programme to fix the root cause of the problem (WITHOUT stopping training).⁠

This approach fixes the problem for the long term and prevents it from coming back when you start lifting heavy again to crush those PBs.⁠

Here’s how Euan managed to reduce his pain, pack on muscle and get strong AF without having to stop training.⁠

You see Euan struggled with shoulder pain for years...⁠

He’d tried getting massages, going to a physio and resting…⁠

Which to be honest, just led to them feeling frustrated because as soon as he went back to lifting his pain came back.⁠

Over the past 2 years I’ve been struggling.

I went to see the doctor countless number of times…

The eczema on my hand has been a nightmare.

And because of COVID and the NHS backlog I have been refused to see a speclialist.

I tried a whole bunch of different creams and anti-biotics and nothing got rid of it.

Eventually the doctor told me I needed to give up being a physio…

Because having to wash my hands all the time was the problem…

So I needed to give up my career.

I was devasted, I nearly burst out crying there in her room.

Since then, I’ve managed it by using a steroid cream everytime it flares up.

I have to use it once a week to keep it at bay.

But here’s the shocking thing!

For the past 6 weeks I haven’t had to use the cream once!

I can’t believe it!

You see using the steroid cream was just treating the symptoms.

It was reducing down the rash everytime it flared up.

But it wasn’t treating the cause of the rash.

I’ve been strugglign with long COVID for the past 2 years too.

And over the past 6 weeks I’ve taken down the amount of stress on my body…

By training less, hydrating myself more and resolving my breathing issues.

And this has fixed the root cause of the problem - the stress on my body was too high…

And my bodies way of letting me know that was my eczema.

The same is true for your injury…

Stretching, foam rolling, massages and scraping are just tools to treat your symptoms…

They don’t actually fix the root cause of the injury.

Once you do fix the root cause of the problem…

You can get strong AF without worrying about getting hurt again.
