Wellbeing, but make it cute 💛

We recently welcomed Goose the skunk, along with rabbits, bearded dragons, snakes, guinea pigs and many more rescued animals who brought so much joy to the Wellbeing Hub at Whipps Cross Hospital 🐰

Supporting staff wellbeing is a huge priority for us and the response from our colleagues was overwhelmingly positive 🫶

💙 Begin your Bank Holiday with some wholesome vibes 💙

Last night, Hollie Page and Spencer Stevenson joined BBC London to share an incredible story of quick thinking, teamwork and survival.

Just before Christmas, Spencer collapsed at Liverpool Street Station after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Hollie – one of our brilliant cardiac physiologists – was on her way to work when she instinctively stepped in, performing CPR alongside other members of the public and station staff. With the help of an on‑site defibrillator, Spencer’s life was saved.

After being rushed to hospital, Spencer was later treated at St Bartholomew’s, where he came full circle as a patient in the same specialist cardiac service Hollie works in.

Now recovering well, Spencer is using his experience to campaign for more defibrillators in public places, helping to ensure others have the same chance he did.

Meet Vicky, a mum of five from Southend who has lived with MS for 18 years and who just made history💫

Vicky is the first patient at Barts Health to receive CAR-T therapy for multiple sclerosis, a groundbreaking treatment that reprograms a patient's own immune cells to fight back against the condition.

🐭"Living with MS is like a house with all the lights on, but there's mice chewing through the wires. The lights flicker, someone fixes them, but then the mice come back", says Vicky.

After years of infusions, injections, and persistent flare-ups, Vicky hopes this trial will "freeze things for a while", so she can be there for her kids and watch them grow up.

This milestone was made possible by our clinical and research teams across The Royal London Hospital and Barts Cancer Centre, and marks a major step forward for MS patients across the UK💙

A new chapter for breast cancer care in east London🩷

Patients are now being treated in the new Smithfield Wing, marking a major step towards developing a dedicated specialist breast cancer centre.

Operating theatres are already open, with more services launching soon, including gynaecology day‑case surgery on 1 April and imaging later this month. The Giltspur Wing will follow in May🏥

Thanks to £16.6m of generous funding from Barts Charity, the centre will deliver more than 2,000 breast cancer surgeries and 75,000 outpatient appointments each year.

Our first patient, Vanya, praised the modern, welcoming space: "I felt really well looked after. The surroundings are lovely, and the team were smiling and so supportive, that’s 50% of the journey for me."

A new era of patient‑centred breast cancer care has begun💙

A room built to contain radiation😷

Behind those doors, Matthew begins the most intense treatment of his life.

In episode 6, we follow his fourth and final round of therapy for rare neuroendocrine cancer, a condition affecting just 4,000 people a year in England💙

The treatment leaves his sweat, saliva and urine radioactive, sealing him behind 15cm‑thick metal doors in a lead‑lined room for two days at a time.

🎥Watch Matthew's treatment in the final episode of Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time tonight, Wednesday 25 March, 8pm on Channel 5.

A 1700s side hustle that’s safely buried in the past🪦

As demand for anatomy training grew, there simply weren’t enough bodies to go around and body snatchers began digging up fresh graves to sell to hospitals and anatomy schools.

It was a grim trade at the time, and it’s important to say it’s completely illegal today and firmly part of medical history.

In Episode 5, Alice visits Tower Hamlets Cemetery to uncover how this trade once worked, and how demand rose from around 200 anatomy students in 1773 to over 1,000 just fifty years later🩺

The moment Maxine’s heart is paused 🫀

With Maxine on the heart–lung machine, surgeons use a special cardioplegia solution to flood the heart with potassium — stopping the electrical signals that make it beat.

Only then can they carry out the most delicate part of open‑heart surgery.

And the best part? After surgery, Maxine said she felt like she could “bounce around the room" and was already back to doing pilates!

🎥 See more in ep 5 of Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time on 5.
