Trapped nerve problem gone! I recently started to try and get in to shape by taking up martial arts and after years of prolonged poor posture problems (incorrect seating position at work) it finally caught up with me. I woke up with a dead arm and panicked a little if I'm honest and had a sharp pain in my neck and shoulder. I immediately spoke to my GP who said they could refer me for Physiotherapy but it would be at least a week before I was given an appointment date. I turned to Google and found Kuer Physiotherapy Clinic and called up. I got an appointment the same day and called in during my lunch break. I was impressed with the clinic itself and hope easy it was to find, the receptionist offered me a drink and said that I would be going in a few minutes. I met with Laura (my physio) who gave me a full examination and I explained that I was probably at fault but also had recently the week before been in a road traffic accident. Diagnoses with a few different issues, 1 from the terrible seating posture and years of neglect and the other from the accident. I have never been to a physio before but have seen chiropractors on a few occasions. I never found chiropractic to be as successful or immediate but had worked in the past. With the Physio treatment after the first session alone and something literally clicked and the pain subsided massively. I have now had 3 sessions and I feel as good as new. But rather than leave it there I have booked in for a follow up health check in 4 weeks time to make sure things are as they should be. I wasn't aware of the damage sitting badly could cause and have taken their advice or re-arranging my workstation, which is already making a big difference. I cannot recommend enough the team at KUER and their expertise. I do not only recommend anyone else to go see them but I will not be going anywhere else in future. 5stars!

Getting people to stay active? Here is an interesting video that has come out recently. Make sure that when you do squats, keep your back slightly arched, bottom out and squat down until your knee reaches the level of your toes.

To promote exercise and the 2014 Olympics, Olympic Changes installed a very special ticket machine at the Moscow subway station. Instead of accepting money as payment, the high-tech ticket machine only accepted exercise.

Survived my second class of yoga. Yoga can be a great alternative to pilates as it not only focuses on mobility but also core strength. Consult with your physiotherapist however before taking up yoga, as it does challenge your shoulder, back and hip strength!!

To those runners or weight lifters out there. This article may be of interest. From experience, I found that I have a really good workout on a Monday, especially after I indulging on carbs all weekend and having a fatty meal on the day of the workout. Perhaps it wasn't all psychological after all! - Sam

High carbohydrate diet prior to endurance events has long been recommended for nutritional fuel. This current study explores the effects of High Fat Meal (HFM) compared to High Carbohydrate Meal (HCM) 4 hours prior to exercise following a high carbohydrate diet for 3 days on endurance performance.

Eight male long-distance runners, who exercise regularly, underwent a number of preliminary exercise tests and measurements one week prior to the study. For the study, the eight men ingested a HCM (~2562 kcal/day total calories; 71% carbohydrates) at all three meals for 3 days prior to the main trials. On the day of the trial, subjects were randomly assigned to either HFM (1007 kcal total calories; 55% fat) or HCM (1007 kcal total calories; 70% carbohydrates) four hours prior to exercise. In addition, 3 minutes prior to exercise, the subjects of the HFM group ingested either a maltodextrin jelly (M; a carbohydrate) or a placebo (P). All subjects participated in all diet regiments with at least one week between each trial. Blood samples and gas exchange measurement were taken for analysis. Athletes exercised for 80 mins at marathon pace and then continued to exhaustion.

The results of this study showed that the average time until exhaustion was higher in subjects who ingested HFM+M compared to the HFM+P or HCM+P. In addition, HFM resulted in higher fat oxidation at rest and exercise compared to HCM, while carbohydrate oxidation was greater in HCM compared to HFM. Overall, the major finding of this study was that carbohydrate ingestion for 3 days prior to a high fat meal on the day of the trial in addition to a small portion of carbohydrate jelly immediately prior to exercise can enhance endurance running performance. This has likely to do with the increase in fat oxidation and the conservation of muscle glycogen during exercise. > From: Murakami et al., Nutrients 4 (2012) 625-637. All rights reserved to MDPI.
