A few years ago I was researching genetic testing for our clinic. In the process, I tested myself.
I found out I carry a pathogenic PALB2 variant, a mutation that significantly raises breast cancer risk. The NHS wouldn’t have offered me that test.
I knew what to do because I’m a doctor. I knew who to call, what it meant, what my options were. I had a risk reducing mastectomy. I’m well.
Most people don’t have that map.
That experience is a big part of why Coyne Medical exists, and why we offer nationwide at-home genetic testing, supported by doctors who specialise in exactly this. Not just a kit through the post. GPs trained in genetics who sit with you through the whole journey: before the result, after it, and for the long term.
Genetic testing is becoming more accessible. But access to a result is not the same as access to care.
