In all my years of interacting with folks, I’ve realised that some people just can’t be helped out of poverty by giving them money, no matter how much you give them. It’s not about the cash in their pockets; it’s about a shift in their mindset. Sometimes, throwing money at the problem makes things worse because it creates a sense of entitlement.

Poverty is more about how you think than how much money you have. To really help people—those who actually want help—you need to expose them to things that reorient their thinking. You can't just hand out cash and expect miracles. Some folks need to experience real hardship to change how they think about money.

My point is, you can't empower people out of poverty just by giving them cash. They need a change in mindset. And this is also applicable to many African nations. We are getting aid, yet the problems don't seem to be going away soon.

So, the other day, I met this brilliant young lady on the train. We hit it off immediately, and as we were chatting, I told her a bit about my work as an Entrepreneur and Identity Coach. Turns out, she's a medical doctor in her late 20s. Pretty cool, right? Then she asked me about my take on identity crisis.

I told her, “You see, when you’re struggling to understand who you are, your purpose, and where you fit in this world, that’s an identity crisis. It messes with your ego—sometimes making you overcompensate for insecurities or, other times, filling you with self-doubt.”

I explained that our ego craves significance and recognition. It's why people buy things they don't need just to impress others or feel bitter about someone else's success. Greed and hatred stick around in our societies today because we're always trying to outshine others, which stops us from acting with kindness and love.

The real issue here is an identity crisis, no matter how highly placed we may think we are on a social status scale! When you don't know who you are or embrace your true self, you start feeling less than others and constantly compare yourself. But once you recognise and accept your true identity, you live authentically without feeling the need to measure up to anyone else.

So, next time you find yourself caught up in that game, remember, it’s all about knowing who you are and living that truth. You don't have to script your story to fit someone else's. You are simply unique!
