Modern Mama UK

Modern Mama UK Founded in 2021 by Alexandra, Modern Mama exists to support women in pregnancy, postpartum & beyond. The result?

Founded in 2021 by Alexandra, a mum, doula, childbirth educator and transformational women's coach, Modern Mama exists to support women in pregnancy, post-partum and beyond. With maternity services in crisis, increasingly women are failed by the system; antenatal education is lacking and postpartum life is often not considered until, well, when the baby gets here! More and more women, not getting

the births they want and feeling less than supported in their early motherhood journeys. Alexandra has a BIG vision; to help women around the world, believe in themselves and put their intuition ahead of the status quo, to have the birth experiences they want & deserve. She is doing this by creating a hub for the modern woman to learn, prepare and connect so they can make informed decisions and take back control of their birth experience, postnatal season and early motherhood.

At the end of every month I sit down to reflect on how the previous month has gone, what I achieved, & take a moment to celebrate my wins. Wow, Q1 was FULL ON!😅
I put myself back out there on social media after a year of mat leave, I've met some wonderful people that have become friends (& business partners!), I've collaborated with the incredible on something I feel extremely passionate about, alongside settling into a new area & supporting my partner & best friend in his goals (all while raising my Son each day). I feel really proud & excited for what's to come in the next quarter...
So, I thought it would be nice to share with you 'what's on my mind' for this month. These aren't goals per say, they are just general thoughts I'll be keeping at the forefront of my mind.

1. Caesarean Awareness Month is really important to me from both a personal & professional point of view. Lots of content coming up!

2. Self-reflection on my own Caesarean experience & sharing that with you; how special it was, despite it not being my first choice & highlighting the importance of planning for this eventuality, regardless of your Birth Plan A.

3. My Life Balance has become a bit too "work" focused (it's natural when you're running your own business & you have an entrepreneurial mindset - it's so hard to switch off!) so I'm looking at how I can ensure I find time for myself within the chaos & also be more present with my Son. J & I are also actively working on how we can ensure quality time together. I'm so excited for our trip to Bath tomorrow!!!

4. I currently have limited time each month due to *all of the above*🤣 BUT I love what I do. I love having convos with you about all things birth. My little business is growing each month & for that I am truly grateful; this month I have new clients & plans for with are in full swing! 🤍
What's on your mind for this month?

As I mentioned over on stories on Monday, April is Caesarean Awareness Month and the theme is .
The campaign focuses on all topics surrounding Caesareans, including reducing preventable caesareans, supporting caesarean recovery and advocating for vaginal births after caesarean (VBAC). With this in mind, and having opted for a Caesarean myself after over 40 hours of back to back labour, this month, I'm going to be sharing knowledge on these things and much more, including my personal birth story.
In the UK, according to the NHS Maternity Statistics, 2021-22 report, the Caesarean birth rate has increased by nearly 70% in the last 10 years. In this same period, we can also see that spontaneous births have declined by nearly 30% and the induction rate has increased by 50%. For the last 3 years, according to the data, you are now more likely to birth with intervention, than to birth spontaneously.
These stats alone should make you question 'what the F is going on' in our maternity system and show you that you need to get prepared, you need to plan, you need to know your stuff, and take control of your birth.
No-one is guaranteed a vaginal birth and that is why I highly recommend you plan for a surgical birth, so that if it does happen, you can still remain in control as much as possible. There is actually quite a lot that you can ask for that isn't 'standard', you just need to know what these things are and then prioritise them.
So, turn on post notifications to find out more about Caesarean births, whether you're choosing to birth this way or it's your Plan B, or even C! Don't sleep on this info Mama!

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be supported by me in during your pregnancy, postpartum and beyond?
Thank you so much for your kind words Yvonne 🧡Yvonne had the most incredible birth, but that's her story to tell, not mine. I was just glad I was able to add value in some way, such an honour to support this Queen.

I need to share something with you...

As I have stepped back into the birth world and have spoken openly about my birth experience more (especially on the IGTV series that I run with ), I have to be honest and say, it has brought up some feelings for me around my birth.

I am nearly 16 months into my motherhood journey and while I initially felt very happy about my birth experience, somehow this has changed over time, and now I don't feel the same; I feel conflicted.

Yes, I had a positive caeserean, in fact, an AMAZING caeserean. That hasn't changed. I fought throughout pregnancy, right till the end, for everything I wanted and needed for us. I made informed decisions, ahead of time, so when I realised that I needed to move to my "Plan B" birth, I felt in control and knew I had done everything I could to ensure this would be the best experience for us.

I had done my preparation and stood my ground, even when I struggled to verbalise things, because certain things were non negotiable (if there was no emergency). I had to stand up for us. But, the Doula in me also wanted to stand up for all women; I was on a bit of a mission to prove that things didn't have to be how we are often told they need to be. And I did, especially around cord clamping in theatre, which we set a record for. This part of my birth, the caeserean, makes me extremely happy and proud. I feel like I did THE MOST, and I will hold this close in my heart forever.

But, here is where I feel really conflicted.

Nearly 16 months on, to reflect back and in spite of knowing the above, feel some level of guilt, is a feeling I can't seem to shake. In some small way, I just can't help but feel like I failed myself and I failed my baby. Not because I didn't birth vaginally, to be very clear. But because, despite knowing A LOT about birth, I let the words of others affect me to the point that it changed the course of my birth.

I gave into a vaginal exam when I knew it wouldn't tell them what they wanted, 30 odd hours in, and I lost trust in my body because my head had been filled with doubt.

I was made to believe that my baby was "never going to come", because he/she was "in the wrong position" and it was just "never going to happen" because I was "probably only about 3cm" (words from midwives).

I know that this, IS. JUST. NOT. TRUE. There was no emergency, baby was fine; he was just in a posterior position, which can make things particularly painful and make labour appear more active/further along than it is.

But, everything that was happening was designed to get my baby into the right position and birth is not linear. I know this, so why did I let these words and fear, ultimately change my plan?

While I had the caeserean I wanted and planned for, did it really have to happen? Could things have been different if I had better support from the midwives? Were they just tired? Why did they loose confidence in me and suggest a VE when I specifically stated I didn't want a VE on my birth plan and if I did then I would ask? I just have so many questions now over whether it really needed to be the way it was.

It's also hard because I LOVED my home birth team, I think there were 7 of them that I saw in total during my pregnancy and birth, and I loved them all. They all had a positive impact on me in some way and so I'm upset now to feel that actually maybe they let me down and robbed me of the birth I wanted because things were taking so long?

I know that there is never any failure in birth, so despite feeling like I did (fail) in some way, I know in my heart that I didn't.

So, next steps, I am going to request my birth notes and book to go through them with the Trust, because I think it's important for me to see how it's been written down and also give them feedback. What I will say is that despite having these feelings, I am excited to hopefully birth another baby some day; I am looking forward to birth and I am clear on things I will do differently. If you've got this far, thanks for hearing me. I'll let you know how I get on!

Final thoughts...

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY -
This post is dedicated to just *some* of the amazing women in my life, all Mamas, all different & unique. The thing that ties them together, in my mind, is their incredible strength.
- It all started with, "so, what's your vibe!?" back in 2018, working together in the food industry & went on to become mothers in the same year. Katie is the biggest hustler I know, always striving to reach her goals, which just get bigger & bigger, all while working, running her own business, & juggling family life. Her determination & strength, is so inspiring to me. She's just launched her newest venture YouTube, check her out!
- I have to thank for this wonderful woman. My first new 'mum' friend & one that gave me faith that I would be able to make new friends in my 30's! We are each others biggest fans, championing our businesses & supporting our parenting choices. How she handles being an incredible mum of '2 under 2', alongside running her own events business, I do not know; she's a super woman & doesn't even know it.
- we lived in the same W.London development & instantly became friends, bonding over the dark times of motherhood (alongside our love for Montessori & unhealthy tkmax/b&m shopping addictions!) We might no longer live so close but I will never forget how our children used to take over baby sensory classes & the kindness Lucy & family showed us when our house purchase fell through last year (forever grateful!) An incredible mother, friend, all round amazing woman tbh, lucky to have you in my life girl.
- another blessing from ! We only met in November & were instantly two peas in a pod; we've celebrated our Sons first birthdays together, launched & hosted a successful IGTV series together, & are now business partners (more news coming soon!) This girl holds it downnn; between work & family life, shes the busiest woman I know, her mind is full of wonderful creative ideas & she 100% has my back, always bringing out the best in me. SO much more to come from us!

So, hey! I’m Alexandra, a mum, doula, childbirth educator and certified transformational women's coach. What a mouthful!🤣
I founded Modern Mama in 2021 to support women in pregnancy, post-partum and beyond. I have a BIG VISION; to help women around the world, believe in themselves and put their intuition ahead of the status quo, to have the birth experiences they want and deserve.
