Did you know that in the UK, the sun is only strong enough to meet our Vitamin D needs from April to September? โ˜€๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Why Vitamin D is important

Vitamin D is important for healthy bones, muscles, and teeth. For example, we need vitamin D to absorb calcium and phosphorus from our food. These nutrients help our body to build and maintain bone.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Why would I need a vitamin D supplement?

Your body makes vitamin D when your skin is out in the sunlight. You can also get it from foods, including eggs, oily fish, and fortified cereals. But itโ€™s difficult for most people in the UK to get enough.

Taking a daily supplement containing 10 ยตg (micrograms) of vitamin D from October to March will help make up this shortfall. If you work indoors, you could also try taking a walk outside at lunchtime to boost your sunlight exposure.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Do I need to take vitamin D all year?

Itโ€™s especially important to take vitamin D supplements during autumn and winter.

From April to September, you can still choose to take vitamin D supplements if you wish. But you normally get more exposure to the sun during these months.

Certain groups are at a higher risk of having low vitamin D. People from these groups should consider taking a supplement throughout the year.

People with dark skin, who donโ€™t make as much vitamin D from sunlight.

People who donโ€™t get much exposure to sunlight. This could apply if you donโ€™t get outdoors much, or if you wear clothes that cover most of your skin.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Do my levels need to be tested?

You wonโ€™t usually need to have a blood test unless you have signs of deficiency.

If youโ€™re an adult, your doctor may ask to test your vitamin D levels if you have pain in your bones, or muscle weakness. This could be a sign of bone disease, like osteoporosis.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Do I need a prescription?

No, you can buy vitamin D supplements from supermarkets, pharmacies, and health food shops. Although you donโ€™t need to take more than 10 ยตg (micrograms), products that provide up to 25 ยตg are suitable for most people.

Although the recommend doses will be suitable for most people, itโ€™s important to take the dose thatโ€™s right for you. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if youโ€™re unsure.

๐Ÿง  PINCH ME: A mnemonic to help spot delirium and identify triggers for stress in people living with dementia.
Delirium is a sudden, acute confusional state that can be distressing for both the person experiencing it and those around them. Itโ€™s especially common in people living with dementia during end-of-life care, where communication barriers make it harder to identify whatโ€™s wrong.
To help carers and families explore possible causes of distress, the British Geriatrics Society introduced the PINCH ME mnemonic:
P โ€“ Pain
I โ€“ Infection
N โ€“ Nutrition
C โ€“ Constipation
H โ€“ Hydration
M โ€“ Medication
E โ€“ Environment
Each letter prompts us to consider a potential trigger for sudden changes in behaviour or mood.
At Bupa, weโ€™ve adapted PINCH ME to support dementia care in residential and nursing homes. Itโ€™s a reminder to look beyond the surface and do the detective work when someone canโ€™t tell us whatโ€™s wrong. As Fran Vandelli, Bupa Dementia Lead explains, โ€œThe PINCH ME model can stop us from making unhelpful (or even harmful) assumptions and can remind us to leave no stone unturnedโ€
Letโ€™s raise awareness this and empower carers with tools that make a difference. ๐Ÿ’™

Sleep is as important for our health as our diets and exercise, yet we often cut it short.

Follow these 5 tips to get the most out of it:
1. Whilst the length of sleep is important (aim for 7-9 hrs a night) but quality of sleep is important too. Improve sleep quality by removing distractions from your bedroom, avoiding caffeine late in the day.
2. Sleep consistency is important - going to bed and waking up at the same time each day (even on weekends or kidsโ€™ holidays) can improve how restorative your sleep is. Keep lie-ins less than 1 hour.
3. Stop snoozing! Each time you fall back to sleep, you initiate a new sleep cycle which takes 90 mins to complete, so breaking it by another alarm 10 mins later is added stress on your body
4. Keep your bedroom cool - your body needs to drop its temperature to initiate and maintain sleep
5. Screen time before bed has similar effects to drinking coffee on the brain. Avoid screens and blue light in the hour before sleep.

This year Iโ€™ve partnered with Bupa to bring you evidence based health information, that you can trust - for more sleep tips, check out Bupaโ€™s website and the Bupa Health YouTube channel!
