PPI’s are a group of medicines that most of us will be prescribed at some point in our life time. They are used to treat gastric acid related conditions and to minimise the impact of certain drugs on the stomach. PPI’s are commonly prescribed in connection with anti inflammatory (NSAID) medications. Two commonly prescribed PPI’s are Omprazole and Lansoprazole.

Studies suggest that, for those who rely on long time use of PPI’s, the risk of dementia including Alzheimer’s is 33% higher.

However further studies are needed to know for certain if there is a link between PPI’s and Dementia, or, is the increase due to the fact that a significant percentage of the individual’s who are reliant on long term use of PPI’s are elderly and therefore are at a higher risk of developing dementia.

If you have any concerns about this or any medication do not stop taking your prescribed medication but do have a frank conversation with your Pharmacist, GP, Consultant or other clinician that is involved in your health.

There are a variety of other drugs that support gastro acid issues that are not part of the PPI family.

5% - 30% of individuals who take statins report a significant increase in joint / muscle pain. However the NHS is aware of this issue and has a clinical pathway that they should follow should you report an increase in joint / muscle pain once you commence statins or commence a new statin.

Statins aren’t always given in tablet form, an injectable version. Inclisiran, is now NICE approved.

If you wish to have a copy of the NHS statin intolerance pathway please contact Muscle Alchemy.

As we are about to embark on another period of intensely warm weather it is important to understand the impact on our bodies. One of the key issues we can face is dehydration but it isn’t always as simple as replenishing fluid. The body loses important minerals when we sweat and these need replacing.

If you are suffering with muscle pain/ cramps when the temperature is raised please consider adding electrolyte supplementation to your daily hydration.

MAGNESIUM

•Magnesium Glycinate
Promotes relaxation and potentially improves sleep quality. It is thought that in addition to aiding insomnia it can also help stress, depression and anxiety.

•Magnesium L-Threonate
Enhances cognitive brain function including depression, menopausal brain fog and Alzheimer’s. It is also believed to help improve sleep quality.

•Magnesium Oxide
Treats acid reflux, indigestion and heartburn. There is some limited evidence that it may help migraines.

•Magnesium Sulphate aka Epsom Salts
Used most commonly used as a bath soak to aid muscle relaxation. Can also be consumed to help constipation.

•Magnesium Citrate
In addition to being a useful laxative it also promotes muscle health and improves muscle pain. Potentially a supplement to aid depression and anxiety.

•Magnesium Chloride
Often found in magnesium lotions to aid muscle pain. Used to treat low magnesium levels.

•Magnesium Lactate
Used to treat individuals with extremely low levels of magnesium or those who are unable to absorb magnesium from magnesium chloride.

•Magnesium Malate
Research is currently being undertaken to see if there is potential to help individuals who suffer from Fibromyalgia.

•Magnesium Taurate
Currently being investigated for potential benefits on high blood pressure and high blood sugar levels.

•Magnesium Oratate
A costly form of magnesium it is believed it may improve blood vessels and the heart, research is continuing.
