What is Torticollis?
By Madelaine Partridge M.Ost

Sometimes called “wry neck”, Torticollis simply means a twisting or tilting of the neck. In babies, this often presents as an apparent preference to look in one direction over the other.

The most common form of Torticollis is a Congenital Muscular Torticollis, often caused by a shortening or tightness of the Sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck.

This can occur for various reasons:

👉Positioning in Utero – especially if space was limited resulting in restricted movement. This is common with small mothers and larger babies, twins, or breech presentations

👉Birth trauma or assisted deliveries including the use of forceps or ventouse

👉Long and difficult labours with slow progression or baby becoming stuck.

How Can Osteopathy Help with Pregnancy-Related Pain?

Pregnancy brings about a range of physical changes that can lead to discomfort and pain. As the baby grows, the body adjusts to accommodate the additional weight, which can strain the muscles and joints. Many pregnant women experience back pain, pelvic pain, and sciatica, especially in the later stages of pregnancy.

These changes are often due to shifts in posture, hormone-related ligament laxity, and increased pressure on the spine.
Osteopathy can provide relief for pregnancy-related pain by gently addressing musculoskeletal imbalances and improving spinal alignment.

Osteopaths use techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, and stretching to alleviate tension, reduce discomfort, and restore balance to the body.

Osteopathic care during pregnancy can help manage pain and improve mobility, allowing you to feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Osteopaths also provide advice on posture and exercises that can strengthen the muscles and support the growing body. With safe and effective osteopathic treatment, many women experience a reduction in pregnancy-related pain, helping them feel better throughout their pregnancy and beyond.

How Can Osteopathy Help with Headaches?

Headaches are a common condition that can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, often affecting daily activities.

Tension headaches, in particular, are often caused by muscle tightness in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Poor posture, stress, or even prolonged screen time can lead to tension in these muscles, resulting in headache pain.

Osteopathic treatment can be highly effective in addressing the underlying causes of tension headaches. By using manual techniques, osteopaths can release muscle tension in the neck and upper back, improve blood flow, and correct misalignments in the spine.

This can help alleviate headache symptoms and reduce the frequency and intensity of future headaches.
In addition to hands-on osteopathic treatments, self-care strategies such as stretching, staying hydrated, and maintaining good posture can be beneficial.

Osteopaths can work with you to develop a personalised plan that addresses the root causes of your headaches, helping you to manage and prevent them effectively.

If you’ve been struggling with headaches, you can make an appointment with one of our osteopaths at osteopathywestlondon.com or if you would like to speak to a member of the team first, you can use the same link to book in for a free 15-minute video consultation, where we would be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Why Visit An Osteopath During Pregnancy

Women’s bodies are remarkable at adapting to the structural changes that occur during pregnancy. The hormone relaxin, produced by the placenta, increases the elasticity of ligaments and soft connective tissues.

This enhanced flexibility helps the spinal and pelvic joints adjust and allows the surrounding ligaments to expand in preparation for childbirth.

However, some women may experience discomfort or pain in the back, groin, buttocks, or legs—often referred to as sciatica.

🌟Through accurate diagnosis, hands-on treatment and prescriptive exercise, osteopathy can help to alleviate sciatica and reduce the likeliness of repeat episodes throughout the pregnancy.

🌟 We can also provide valuable advice on posture and exercise during pregnancy, helping to ease issues like heartburn, indigestion, and constipation.

🌟We'll even recommend optimal positions for labour to reduce the risk of back problems later. Post-natal check-ups for both mother and baby are highly beneficial, as women may experience discomfort due to feeding or carrying positions.

📅 Book your appointment today with an experienced osteopath at osteopathywestlondon.com to support your journey through pregnancy and beyond.

Our Story

Osteopathy West London are dedicated to patient care and specialise in the treatment of back and neck pain. We adopt a holistic approach to health care and believe in treating the whole person not just the symptoms.

We use a direct hands-on approach to osteopathy and use a wide range of osteopathic techniques including the use of spinal manipulation, remedial massage and medical acupuncture. Though some gentle spinal manipulations (joint ‘cracking’, ‘clicking’ or ‘popping’) may be used, we believe that there is so much more to treatment and adopt a far more therapeutic approach involving joint mobilisation and muscle therapy.

As well as effectively alleviating the symptoms of pain and discomfort, a strong emphasis is put on overall health and well-being. Following treatment, we offer prescriptive exercise plans, dietary suggestions and self-care advice.

Our aim is to help each and every patient back to their best health both inside and out! Osteopathy West London is part of Body and Soul Zone, a multidisciplinary health care centre in Ealing Broadway, West London. Hannah Whitcombe is both the founder and owner of Osteopathy West London.
