Sciatica and piriformis syndrome both couse buttock and leg pain, but they differ in their orgin.
Sciatica is a symptom of sciatica nerve irritation, often caused by a lower back issue like: herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis, injuries, tumors, cysts or other growths.
Anything that makes the piriformis press on the sciatic nerve can cause piriformis syndrome. The most common piriformis syndrome causes are: inflamation (swelling) in the piriformis or the tissues arround it , muscle spasms, scarring in the muscle.
These issues can result from:
- climbing stairs, walking or running
- working on the knee
- injuring the hip
- lifting something (heavy) improperly
- not warming up before physical activity
- overexercising
With sciatica pain is almost imposible to move, with piriformis syndrome - movement is helps to relieve the pain.
I always said to my patients that the first symptom of piriformis syndrome is a problem with pitting a sock or shoe.
From lokal doctors you will usually get naproxen and co-codamol, which unfortunately do not really help. For both problems help painkillers for neuralgia eg.gabapentin
To treat both problems I recommend:
Sciatica - Breuss Massage (Dorn Method )
Piriformis syndrome - sport massage (trigger point ), very helpful for both problems is lower back stretching ‼️ I could easly say that is the stretching is the basis and daily obligation. Very helpful is also accupuncture, utrasounds therapy ,kinesio taping and cupping .
All treatments are available in my massage room.
I attached here the best video of exercises for piriformis syndrome (in Polish language but you will see how to do it )
