Last year, we shared Adolphe’s story and how innovation is helping to expand access to cleft care. One year on, his journey shows just how much can change. 💙
When we first met Adolphe, he was a six-month-old baby, not yet walking or talking. Today, he’s on the move – toddling along beside schoolchildren in their uniforms, full of curiosity and confidence. 👣✨
Adolphe was born with a cleft lip and palate in north-west Rwanda. Thanks to free care at a hospital close to home, working in partnership with Operation Smile, he was able to receive safe surgery without his family having to travel long distances. “We are so happy it could be done nearby,” his parents shared. 🏥
His story was first featured in a BBC StoryWorks film highlighting how Operation Smile, alongside partners like Microsoft, is using AI to support cleft care – helping surgeons assess outcomes and bring expert guidance to places where specialist access is limited. That innovation, combined with investment in local hospitals and training, means care is reaching more families, faster. 🌍
Today, Adolphe’s family can walk through their community without fear of stares, and his mother dreams of a future filled with education and opportunity. “No one thought it was possible,” she said. “They thought it was a miracle.” 🌱
