This is a treasure from my trip to Japan seventeen years ago. The text reads: "The heart of Shiatsu is the heart of a mother. Press, and the fountain of life will flow." I received this from a friend's friends. When I told them about my plan to train in Shiatsu therapy, they excitedly recited this well-known Japanese proverb and wrote it down for me—a precious gift of encouragement, initiation, and direction that I cherish deeply.
"Press, and the fountain of life will flow." This is the essence and unique promise of Shiatsu. It is less about anatomical structures and more about energetic connection, focused with the intention to promote life.
How can I describe what "the heart of a mother" means to me? I'll tell you about mine.
My mother carried me, inside and out. As a child, she nourished, guided, watched over, and protected me. As a young adult, she listened, accepted me as I was, and wished the best for me. As I grew, she remained present—always happy and welcoming when I returned home. An enormous presence in my life, a fountain of love that continues to flow, years after her departure.
The gifts I received from her fill me and inspire my practice of Shiatsu. I aim to be present, observing and accepting whatever emotions or reactions arise. My focus and intention is on the recovery and happiness of my patient. I let the patient guide me, sensing their body's energy shift and responding with touch. I create space for natural healing to emerge, and together, we celebrate it.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to share this beautiful therapy with the world. Get in touch, and let's talk some more.
