Avalanche Warning for the French Alps: A Call for Caution

As a healthcare professional and air ambulance paramedic, I last week enjoyed the warm weather in the mountains in Europe . However, with rising temperatures comes an increased risk of avalanches, resulting in over 100 fatalities this season alone.

Many skiers and holidaymakers underestimate the importance of adequate insurance. Unfortunately, this oversight can lead to difficult situations for families who must make tough decisions regarding medical treatment and repatriation of loved ones.

Engaging in winter sports can be costly, so I urge everyone to secure comprehensive insurance that covers medical expenses, transportation, and emergency evacuations. Additionally, take necessary precautions, use proper safety equipment, and stay informed about avalanche conditions.

Let us enjoy the beauty of the Alps responsibly, while being mindful of the risks involved.

Stay safe on the slopes!

As a flight paramedic, I've had my fair share of adventurous assignments, but my recent trip back from the US took the cake— or should I say the "business class upgrade"?

On my way home, the flight crew, knowing I was off duty, asked if I could assist a female passenger in economy who was experiencing excruciating pain in her legs. She needed an upgrade to business class so she could lay flat and elevate her legs. Sounds reasonable, right?

When I approached her, I introduced myself and explained my off-duty status. I could only offer her some paracetamol, which she promptly deemed "inadequate." In her best "I demand an upgrade" voice, she insisted she could see an empty business class seat and insisted on it. A firm "no" followed from the crew, and we all settled in for our meals.

But the plot thickened! A short time later, the same passenger called us back, now claiming she had a brain aneurysm and demanding that upgrade again.

With no medical documentation to back up her claim, tension escalated. The pilot even mentioned diverting to Halifax, Nova Scotia, for hospital treatment and definitive care.

After a moment of consideration, she suddenly decided she was "well enough" to continue her flight to London without any further complaints. I guess all it took was a little brainstorming about potential detours and emergency landings to fix that leg pain!

So here’s to all the passengers out there who think little dramatics is the quickest route to business class! Remember, next time you fly, perhaps a little patience (and maybe some paracetamol) is in order! ✈️😂

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Mr Oliver Adebayo after a long illness. My friends and colleagues are deeply saddened by this loss. I had the privilege of working alongside Oliver for many years on a medical team, and I witnessed firsthand his unwavering dedication to his work.

The surgeon is a former president of the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association, he tirelessly supported young doctors in their journey into surgery.

Oliver leaves behind a loving wife and a 5-year-old son. In this difficult time, the medical community is coming together to support his family. If you would like to contribute, please visit our JustGiving page here:

It’s true that many airlines often don’t provide compensation for doctors and healthcare professionals who help during inflight emergencies, despite the significant savings they may incur when a flight is not diverted.

As a flight medicine professional with over 15 years of experience, I’ve noticed that while the flight crew acknowledges our presence and often expresses gratitude, the compensation offered can be inconsistent and often doesn’t reflect the level of care provided. It’s reassuring to see that many international carriers are equipped with extensive medical supplies and telemedicine capabilities, allowing us to communicate directly with medical professionals on the ground.

However, our primary duty as healthcare professionals remains the same: to provide the best possible care to those in need, even in the air. While the rewards may vary, knowing that we can make a difference in someone’s wellbeing is what motivates us to assist, regardless of the circumstances surrounding compensation

Have you observed that airlines do not compensate doctors for assisting during an emergency. For example, if a travelling doctor says that a flight no longer needs to be diverted because of improvement in the passenger’s condition, airlines do save a lot of money right? But have you ever heard of ...
