It's glaucoma awareness month. Did you know that glaucoma is often called the silent-sight-stealer as the first signs can be problems in your field of vision.

Glaucoma is a condition where the pressure inside the eye builds up much like an over inflated tyre. This pressure then affects the delicate nerves and light receptors within the eye.

It's important to get your eyes checked regularly, especially if you have family members who have had glaucoma. At Kerk Davies Opticians we use a method of testing eye presure that doesn't involve the puff of air test.

You can find out more about glaucoma herehttps://www.rnib.org.uk/your-eyes/glaucoma-awareness-month/

DID YOU KNOW.....there is a natural tendency for our eyes to become a little bit more short-sighted in dim light? It's often referred to as night myopia and can be part of why we find driving at night more troublesome. Together with glare from bright LED headlights this can be an issue for many.

You can minimise this effect by making sure your spectacle or contact lens prescription is up to date, and that you keep the surface of both your spectacle lenses AND your car windscreen (inside and out!) clean and clear.

Its the 2nd day of National Eye Health Week and today we are focusing (pun intended!) on SHORT SIGHTEDNESS, otherwise known as myopia. Those with myopia have difficulty seeing things in the distance and most will need spectacles or contact lenses to see clearly to drive.

Higher levels of myopia are linked with issues that can affect the retina (where light receptors found at the back on the eye), such as retinal detachment which is a serious sight threatening condition. Its therefore important to attend regular eye examinations to pick up on any changes in your vision and to let your optometrist know if you are having any unusual vision symptoms.

Our latest individualised spectacle lens technologies mean that you can have lightweight thinner lenses to help you look good and see well. Ask our dispensing opticians about thinner lenses on your next visit.

Its National Eye Health Week, and what better way to start this than to talk about the fabulous performance of Chris and Dianne on last Saturday??

Chris has a condition called RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA, which is a degenerative genetic disorder that often starts in teenage years. It starts with a loss of function in their photoreceptor cells and affects colour and peripheral vision first. Often those affected are left with a central spot of vision whereas others like Chris may be affected more so.

Its really important that children attend regular eye exams to pick up any deterioration early on.

You can learn more about RP on the RNIB and RetinaUK.org.uk websites.

With hay fever season ahead of us, here are a few tips for happy eyes:

* If you develop itchy eyes, a cold compress can provide temporary relief and the cooling sensation can help reduce inflammation. Dry-eye drops that have been cooled in the fridge can have a similar effect.

* Wear sunglasses when outside – wraparound styles offer more protection from pollen.

* Keep an eye on the forecast for higher pollen levels. Avoid going out in the early evening and midmorning when the pollen count is at its highest.
