A week into Dry January, it can help to check in.

• How has my body felt this week?
• Has anything surprised me?
• What has been harder or easier than expected?

Noticing these changes can help you understand your relationship with alcohol more clearly.

Checking in with people
Asking ‘Are you okay?’ Most people say yes even when they’re not.

Try:
• ‘How have you been feeling in the evenings lately?’
• ‘Have you been managing your drinking okay this week?’
• ‘Is there a time of day that feels hardest?’

Practical questions give people space to open up.

This month we are using Dry January as a time to reflect. Dry January does not have to be about planning change or setting goals. It can simply be a chance to pause and notice.

As the month begins, you might ask yourself:

What role does alcohol usually play in my life?
What am I hoping to get from this break?
How do I feel about taking time off drinking?

A lot of people plan a ‘fresh start’ on 1st January. But if you drink every day, stopping suddenly can cause:

• Seizures
• Severe confusion
• Hallucinations
• Medical emergencies

If you want to cut down safely, speak to us first. We can help you taper rather than go into risky withdrawal.

Families Under Pressure: How To Support Someone Who’s Drinking More This Month

December is stressful for families. If someone you care about is drinking more:
• Focus on safety, not arguments
• Keep water and food available
• Avoid ‘just stop then’. It can be medically unsafe to stop
• Look out for morning shakes, sweating or confusion

If you’re worried, speak to us. We support families and carers, and have a dedicated service just for this.

December is the month we see:

• More people drinking earlier in the day
• More mixing alcohol with sleeping tablets
• More people drinking alone at home
• Higher tolerance followed by dangerous withdrawals

You don’t have to wait until January to get support. We’re open throughout December.

Loneliness and Relapse: Why December Is a High-Risk Month

Many relapses we see in December aren’t about ‘temptation’. They’re about loneliness. When routine disappears and people spend more time alone, cravings hit harder.

If you’re in recovery, make a plan for:

• What time of day loneliness is worst
• Who you can message instead of drinking
• One activity that reliably breaks a craving

If you need support, call us. We can help you build a plan.

If You’re Worried About Someone’s Drinking, Don’t Start With a Confrontation

A lot of people worry about a loved one’s drinking in the lead up to Christmas.

What helps:
• Ask what their stress levels are like
• Offer practical support (meals, company, chats)
• Notice signs of withdrawal

What doesn’t help:
• ‘Just stop’ (stopping or reducing too quickly can be dangerous)
• Blame
• Big confrontations

At CGL we have a dedicated Family and Carers Service that can offer support. Contact us on 0800 014 7440 Monday to Friday.

Relapse Risk in December: Plan Before You Need It

Relapse risk goes up in December because:
• Routines break
• Alcohol is everywhere
• Family conflict increases
• Loneliness hits harder

If you’re in recovery, make a plan for:
• What days and times are the hardest
• Who your ‘safe person’ is
• What you’ll do if cravings hit

If you want help building a plan, give us a call.
