Testosterone is important for men. As a hormone or ‘chemical messenger’, it plays a central role in the development of male reproductive organs such as the te**es and prostate as well as of secondary sexual characteristics including increased muscle and bone mass and growth of body hair.

Low testosterone levels (or low availability and activity of testosterone in the body) can lead to men suffering from a range of symptoms that affect their quality of life such as: low energy, low libido, er****on problems, depression, anxiety, irritability and anger, night sweats, hot flushes, joint pain, weight gain, memory loss, gynaecomastia (or man b***s), loss of muscle mass, weight gain, poor concentration and brain fog.

In addition to these "male menopause" symptoms, there is mounting evidence indicating that very low testosterone can be linked to a host of serious diseases in later life and older age. These can include osteoporosis (reduced bone mass/brittle bones) and Alzheimer’s disease.

At the Centre for Men’s Health, face-to-face appointments with expert healthcare professionals are a key part of our service. They are part of our established patient pathway for men seeking testing for low testosterone and for ongoing care if they start treatment with Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT).

Our patient journey starts with ‘done in a day’ venous blood testing (a cut above finger prick testing by post) and all our patients benefit from face-to-face appointments with the country’s leading experts in men’s health. It means treatments are individualised, dosing is optimum and testosterone formats which best suit patient’s lifestyles can be discussed.

Face-to-face appointments also allow for an essential physical exam for prostate cancer and any other problems which may affect the doctor’s diagnosis and recommendations for treatment. More than that, we find that meeting the doctor in person allows patients to establish a personal rapport that gives them the confidence to discuss matters more openly and freely than they would in a remote call when they’ve never met each other.

Ongoing testing and interpretation of results by doctors is critical. Any man prescribed TRT will have their overall health checked by our medical team on a regular basis to monitor side effects, symptom relief and further issues such as sexual function, ED and prostate concerns.

How common is low testosterone? It is a question we are often asked by our patients.

According to scientific research, 4 in 10 males (aged 45 years and older) have low testosterone.

Yet only about 1% men in the UK are being treated with Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT).

Low Testosterone goes by many names – Testosterone Deficiency, Low-T, Andropause, Male Menopause, Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome, Hypogonadism. All of these names refer to the same underlying medical issue; where a low or insufficiently active level of testosterone has led to symptoms that affect a man’s quality of life.

Thinking about getting a ? Then you need to think about what type of blood sample is best. In theory, finger prick blood testing, done at home and sent off by post should be simple. But there are hidden complications that mean the results you receive from finger prick testing might not be accurate. In the worst case, the lab won’t be able to use your sample and you have to repeat the process.

The best way to get a sample of blood suitable for accurate analysis is with a venous blood test, where a sample taken by a phlebotomist (in a clinic or at home). It is much less likely to suffer from problems with having to re-do the test and is generally more reliable in producing accurate blood test results.
