Dr Richard Hewitt, interstitial lung disease specialist based at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, published a new article in Thorax, one of the world's leading respiratory medicine journals, discussing how biological changes associated with ageing can make the lung more vulnerable to developing pulmonary fibrosis.

Groundbreaking research published in Nature Cardiovascular Research has used over 3,800 digital heart models to study how age, gender, and lifestyle impact heart health.

We're proud that Professor Sanjay Prasad and Dr Brian Halliday, consultant cardiologists at Royal Brompton, contributed to this pioneering study led by Professor Steven Niederer at Imperial College London.

The 'cardiac digital twins' have already revealed insights into how aging, obesity, and gender differences affect heart function, helping us better understand and predict heart disease risk.

A fantastic collaboration with Imperial College London, King’s College London, and The Alan Turing Institute.

New research on phenotyping pulmonary sarcoidosis from Dr Maria Kokosi (Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital) and Dr Nishanth Sivarasan (Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust) explores how modern imaging could transform how we classify and manage this unpredictable condition.

Despite over a century of imaging advances, there’s still no clear consensus on how to define sarcoidosis subtypes. This review highlights current challenges, potential solutions, and what’s next for imaging-led phenotyping.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in respiratory medicine, imaging, or clinical research.

Priya Reehal, lead cardio-oncology clinical nurse specialist at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospital Foundation Trust , was recently invited to speak on the British Cardiology Journal TV about the evolving role of a Cardio-oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).

In her talk, Ms Reehal also highlights the establishment of the UK's first Cardio-Oncology service, launched at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in 2011 under the leadership of Dr Alexander Lyon and Professor Stuart D Rosen.

As cancer treatments become increasingly effective, but also more likely to impact cardiovascular health, the demand for specialist in cardio-oncology care continues to grow. This evolving field places CNSs at the forefront of multidisciplinary patient care.

A cystic fibrosis patient, Joe Russel, who received a life-saving lung transplant at Harefield Hospital nearly 10 years ago, has donated a stunning pair of replica lungs made entirely from origami to the transplant unit.

Designed over two years, the lungs are anatomically accurate, from trachea to bronchi , and reflect Joe’s journey and gratitude to his care team, donor, and the gift of life.

His consultant, Dr Vicky Gerovasili, said: “The origami lungs are a physical manifestation of what a transplant can give someone, they represent a life being lived.”

Now on display at Harefield Hospital, the lungs also raise awareness of the vital importance of organ donation.
