Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in over 600 biochemical reactions in the body. It plays a role in brain function, mood, bone health, metabolism, heart health, immune and nervous system function.

With depleted soils and stressful lives, most of us could benefit from more magnesium.

There are no rules really. Find what you enjoy that fits in with your cycle (i.e. not the same intensity week in and week out) and rest when you need to.

The benefits of finding your exercise sweet spot are endless: increased energy, mood, reduces constipation, microbiome benefits, supports agni, supports oestrogen clearance, bone and metabolic health, reduces prostaglandins, inflammation and cortisol, the list could go on!

Hit save if this post is useful, or let me know what sort of exercise helps your symptoms.

This guide was born out of frustration with people still saying endometriosis is an oestrogen dominant condition. Things have moved on. If you’re looking to integrate natural ways to manage your symptoms, then the immune and nervous systems have to be considered. This still applies if surgery is your chosen treatment route.

Yes, oestrogen needs managing, but focusing on hormone balance or using synthetic hormonal medication as ‘treatment’ overlooks so many of the complexities of this condition. There is so much more that can be done, and this starts with looking at the body as a whole.

FAQ: Can I work with you if I do not have a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of endometriosis?

Yes, of course; here is one client I saw recently.

"I came to Lara because I had been suffering with intense pain; my pelvis felt inflamed around the first days of my period and I had nausea so bad it would stop me from sleeping but make it very difficult get of out of bed. After just one session with Lara, and after following the course of herbs and diet, my next period was totally pain-free and three months later, has continued to be so! Lara is a warm, compassionate and thorough practitioner and carefully combed through all the facets of my life in order to create a plan for me. I felt her genuine care and support throughout. I feel well equipped now to eat and take care of myself appropriately during my cycles – even though I thought I'd been pretty healthy before! It's such a relief not to dread my period – thank you Lara!"

If your period pain is intense, disrupts your day-to-day activities, and doesn't respond to simple pain killers, then this is something to discuss with your GP. We can work together alongside this, but it’s so important to know what you are dealing with and to rule other conditions or infections out. If you need support, send me a message and we can arrange a call to work out your next steps

So much is happening this month, but a busy month is a good one when you love the work you do.

As someone that doesn’t have endometriosis myself, I’m often asked what drew me to this work? There are many reasons, but I want to highlight this one; As a society, we cannot expect only those with the condition to bring awareness and advocate because just living with this condition is more than enough. We need more women who aren't in frequent or daily pain to take some of the burden off the people that are.

I wrote this to someone with endo last night, and I hope it resonates with others too.

Ayurveda recognises the strengths of modern medicine, and for endometriosis, expert excision surgery can be a vital part of treatment for many women. However, this alone is not enough, a holistic approach is required.

Ayurveda is a medical system that includes foods as a way to address disease. Any way of eating can be considered Ayurvedic if it follows Ayurvedic principles and considers your individual needs. No single food is celebrated or demonised.

Ayurveda considers your body, mind and spirit when treating disease, this doesn't mean you have to be spiritual to benefit. Being open-minded and curious helps you get the most out of treatment. Most of my clients wish to explore their spiritual connection during our time together.

Tumeric and ginger have anti-inflammatory properties and should be frequently included in cooking. But when using Ayurveda to treat or manage disease, single herbs are rarely used. Many of the herbal formulations I use contain 20 plus ingredients.

Ashwagandha is everywhere, and it’s hailed as good for everyone. If you come to me and are taking ashwagandha i’ll likely stop it, until agni is balanced and excess toxins (ama) are removed. I might reintroduce it later but in a herbal blend, not as a single herb.

I hope you learnt something new, let me know if you did x

Along with my regular consultations helping women with endometriosis, I have had several calls over the last few weeks (and more planned) with healthcare professionals, nurses, pharmacists who want to leave the NHS to pursue more fulfilling and meaningful careers. So many more highly trained professionals are asking questions about how we currently treat chronic diseases. It feels like maybe the narrative that pharmaceutical medicine is the only way out is finally slipping. I welcome all these calls and the connections I have made. The more of us, the better.

To me, there is nothing more fulfilling than helping someone remove the labels that modern medicine has stuck onto them, to move past disease as part of identity and to realise that suffering is not inevitable.

All pharmacists should check out , her support has been invaluable to enable me to do this work

1 in 10 is a lot; think how many women are in your friendship group; chances are one or two could have endometriosis.

It’s a disgrace how little healthcare professionals are taught about this condition. I was taught in-depth about many common conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and asthma, but endometriosis, nothing. When I first came across a woman in hospital with it, I assumed it must be a rare condition; I needed to quickly educate myself before signing off her medication. I remember being shocked to learn it affects 1 in 10.

So much needs to be done, awareness, action, more research, better training, more specialist surgeons, and more education around the holistic approach to support and manage symptoms.

This information won't make complete sense to everyone, but you do not need to understand how Ayurveda works to experience the benefits. That being said, I often give clients an overview of the elements and doshas contributing to their symptoms.

Vata must always be considered in endometriosis because it drives other imbalances. Excess vata will be present during a symptom flare. The same techniques that balance vata are the practices that many women rely on during symptom flares, so many are practising Ayurveda without even knowing it! However it’s what we do outside of flares that can have the biggest impact.

The importance of balancing the nervous system is unanimous amongst holistic practitioners whether or not they use Ayurvedic principles in their practice. Only when we calm the nervous system can the body feel safe and activate the innate desire to heal.

Signs of vata imbalance include pain, dryness (constipation, dry skin), bloating, stiffness, anxiety, and generally feeling unbalanced, wired and not able to relax fully. If this resonates with you, it could be that you need to restore some calm to your nervous system.
