To PROP or NOT? 💭

I know what you're thinking...

➡️ They’re only for beginners
➡️ You don’t know how to use them
➡️ You don’t need them
➡️ You never see Instagram yogis using props so surely that makes you worse at yoga for using them?

❌ Wrong

Unlike the picture perfect yogis you see on Instagram, props aren’t here for the aesthetics. They’re here to HELP you! Trust me, they are the sidekick you wish you’d found earlier!

The practice of Yin yoga is based heavily around the use of props, so here’s some of my favourites you can expect to use during a Yin yoga class and why they can help take your practice to new levels:

⚡BRICKS + BLOCKS
These are the most versatile props around and can be used at various heights to provide support. Pop a block under your thighs in Butterfly pose to support your end range of motion and protect your lower back, or rest your head on a brick during Sphinx pose to reduce strain in the neck.

⚡STRAP
An adjustable strap can be a great way to Straps create resistance and maintain stability of joints. Try a strap around your thighs during Bridge pose or around your ankles during Legs up the Wall.

⚡BOLSTER
My absolute favourite prop, especially during a more restorative practice. These are soft and comfy, supporting the body to relax deeper into postures, whether it be resting to chest during a Caterpillar or Child's pose or laying back to open the chest during a reclined heart opener.

👉Want to know more about how props can support your yoga practice? I teach all this and more during my Yin yoga workshops and lucky for you there is still time to join my upcoming Yin Yoga for Spring workshop this weekend 🌸

PSA INCOMING 📣

If you’re not making the time to slow down and rest, then of course you’re going to feel like you’re constantly on the go!

Ask yourself this ⬇️

👉 When was the last time you took some time out for yourself and completely stopped?
👉 When did you last step away from the to-do list?
👉 When did you last have a day with no work or social plans?
👉 When was the last time you felt really rested?

If you’re struggling to remember, take that as a sign that you need to SLOW DOWN!

In desperate need of some R&R right now?

The good news is you don’t need to blow your bank balance with two weeks in the Caribbean to get it. How about 90 minutes in Deptford instead? 😂

That’s right, booking is now open for my latest Yin yoga workshop at The Yoga Room in Deptford where I’ll be sharing the best tips, tricks and techniques from Yin yoga for slowing down and giving your energy levels a boost just in time for Spring.

❓IS YIN YOGA EASY?

It may not look like much, holding postures on the floor for a few minutes at a time. In fact, I often recommend yin yoga as an ideal practice for beginners or people new to yoga as a way of exploring what your body can do in a slow and considered way with the support of many yoga props (big love to yoga props 💚💪)

👉🏻 But minimal movement doesn’t mean minimal effort.
👉🏻 Staying low to the ground doesn’t mean low intensity or impact.
👉🏻 Moving slowly doesn’t mean you won’t be pushed to your limit.
👉🏻 And it certainly doesn’t mean it’s easy!

Ask yourself this - do you find it easy to be completely still? No distractions, no movement, just being completely still?

❎ Probably not!

If you live a busy life running from place to place, job to job, then being still probably feels like the HARDEST thing to do!

Your mind will find ways to wander back to your to-do lists and plans and holding your body in poses for 5 minutes at a time can feel nothing short of uncomfortable. In fact, the combination of physical and mental stillness makes yin yoga even more challenging that other styles of yoga out there.

So why do it?

👉🏻 Longer holds in postures teaches you how to be more patient, more resilient and relinquish control
👉🏻 Using props teaches you that there is strength in asking for help and support
👉🏻 Listening to your thoughts teaches you clarity and awareness
👉🏻 Being fully present with your body and breath teaches you to be more focused
👉🏻 Slowing down teaches you how to simply ‘be’ in amongst all the ‘doing’ of everyday life

It’s easy if you know how, and I’m here to show you how 🙋

Booking opens tomorrow for my upcoming workshop 🌸 AWAKEN: Yin Yoga for Spring 🌸

Over 90 minutes, I’ll be guiding you through a slow, steady and considered yin yoga practice to help you transition from the dormant months of winter into the brighter months of spring. You’ll set intentions for the months ahead, take time to rest, connect with your body and breath and leave feeling both rested and energised.

The workshop is suitable for all levels, especially those of you who want to give yoga a try but don’t know where to start!

CALLING ALL BUSY BEES 🐝

How are you?
BUSY

I hear it all the time from friends, family and colleagues and am guilty of saying it myself far too often. For most of us, busy has become an automatic response and a default way to live.

Being busy is worn like a badge of honour and if you’re not busy, well what’s wrong with you?!

If you’re measuring your self-worth by how full your social calendar is, how many hours of work you can fit into the day, how long your to-do list is, then by the same token you are measuring yourself worthy of feeling ❌ overworked, ❌ run down, ❌ stressed, ❌ constantly tired and ❌ unable to switch off.

Is this really the life you want?

Didn’t think so! Something needs to change and I’m here to help! 🙌

I’m pleased to finally reveal the details of my next ⭐YIN WORKSHOP ⭐ - yes, yin is making a comeback to my schedule and for the first time ever, you’ll be able to join me both IN PERSON and ONLINE!

Join me on Sunday 27th March for AWAKEN: Yin Yoga for Spring. This slow and restful yoga practice is inspired by the transition of seasons and how moving into spring can bring about a shift on a physical, emotional and mental level.
You’ll leave after 90 minutes feeling both RESTED and ENERGISED - ready to reawaken after the long dark months of winter towards the lighter and brighter days ahead!

🧘 AWAKEN: Yin Yoga for Spring
📅 SUNDAY 27TH MARCH
⏰ 5.30 - 7PM
➡️ ONLINE + IN PERSON @ The Yoga Room Deptford

Booking opens on Thursday this week, but comment 🙌 below to get your name on the waitlist now!

⭐ HOW YOGA CAN BENEFIT YOUR MENTAL HEALTH ⭐

A lot of us, including myself, will have initially been introduced to the physical practice of yoga to gain, well, physical benefits!

Once you start, it doesn’t take long to see that the benefits of a regular yoga practice spread far beyond flexibility!

After the communal challenges of the past couple of years (can you believe it’s nearly been two years?! 😲) I’m seeing more and more people drawn to yoga for it’s mental health benefits.

Yoga has the power to change the way you think and feel every day so here’s 3 of my favourite ways yoga can help your daily mental wellbeing:

1️⃣ REGULATES YOUR STRESS RESPONSE
In other words, yoga moves you from sympathetic nervous system to parasympathetic nervous system to ease feelings of anxiety and stress and take you to a more relaxed state of being. Think less ‘fight or flight’ and more ‘rest and digest’

2️⃣ BOOSTS CONCENTRATION, CLARITY AND FOCUS
If you find it hard to focus, yoga can help bring focus and clarity to your everyday life. Balance postures are great for this, or simply bringing a focused awareness to your breathing - I particularly like box breathing for this!

3️⃣ BETTER UNDERSTAND YOUR EMOTIONS
Want to know more about why you feel what you feel? Yoga provides the introspection and space to connect with your emotional self - the good, bad, happy and sad - it’s all welcome in the yoga space! Learn how to tune into your emotions and in turn, better understand yourself.

Has yoga improved your mental wellbeing? I’d love to know ⬇️

Did you know...

That’s right, there is more than one type of yoga practice! 🧘

If you’ve ever:
👉 Thought yoga wasn’t for you after trying one class
👉 Felt stagnant or bored with your existing practice
👉 Wanted to explore more of what yoga has to offer
👉 Thought about trying yoga but don't know where to start

It’s time to give another style a go! After all, yoga is not a ‘one size fits all practice’ and different styles will better suit different people.

Here’s my ‘at a glance’ guide to some of the types of yoga you may see on offer at studios near you - because trying to Google it yourself can leave you more confused than you were to start with!

Want to practice with me? I offer weekly vinyasa flow classes both in person and online, and I’ll be releasing details next week of an upcoming yin workshop - yes, yin is making a comeback to my schedule, baby 💖

➡️ Be sure to hit follow to be the first to know all the workshop deets - it’s going to be a special one!

Answer me this ⬇️

Have you ever felt like your yoga practice isn’t good enough or been put off starting yoga altogether because you don’t think you’ll be good enough? 🤔

It’s easy to see why anyone would think that - scroll through to see how misrepresented yoga is especially for those of you curious to start a practice.

Marry this with the dilution of yoga from an ancient philosophical practice to a solely physical activity, well there’s no wonder so many of you feel like you need to look a certain way, have a strong practice, and be super flexible to be ‘good’ at yoga!

As a yoga teacher, my mission is to create an experience of yoga that works for YOU! That might be less movement and more stillness, it might involve lots of props and modifications, it could be pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone or becoming comfortable with the experience within it 💪

🙅‍♀️ There is no requirement of arms balances, headstands or any other fancy shapes to be part of this experience and there never will be!

👉🏻 I want you to have the confidence in YOUR practice that you deserve so if you're ready to start feeling GOOD about your yoga practice, DM me GOOD to find out how I can help 🌟

Hey big spender 👋

Ever caught yourself saying I DON’T HAVE TIME or I’M TOO TIRED as a reason to not do something?

I’m guilty of this for sure and have found myself using these words a lot more recently.

Reframing the narrative around time and energy has been a game changer for me and one way to do this is thinking of your time and energy as currency. Everything you do and every decision you make has a cost of some sort

➡️ The real cost of a TV binge isn’t the subscription fee, it’s your TIME.

➡️ Mindlessly scrolling social media isn’t free, it costs your FOCUS.

➡️ Saying yes to plans you don’t want to do is costing you precious ENERGY.

You have the power to choose how you spend and more importantly invest your time and energy so next time you catch yourself saying you don’t have the time or energy for something, try asking yourself this ⬇️

❓ Is it that you don’t have time or that it’s not a priority?
❓ Are you really too tired or just don’t want to invest your energy?

Whether prioritising your time and energy means having a rest day, socialising with friends, cracking on with life admin or practising yoga, make sure you are consciously spending it in a way that feels right for YOU!

Too stressed to feel blessed? 🤯

I get it! With never ending to-do lists, running from job to job, squeezing in social events, it’s easy to feel weighed down and stressed. Where’s the love in that?! 🤷‍♀️

The longest and most intimate relationship you will ever have is with yourself yet you spend the majority of your time and energy on other people.
Whilst having loved ones around you is an essential part of life, this shouldn’t be at the expense of loving yourself first. After all, how can you be expected to give love to other people if you don’t feel it for yourself?

This Valentines Day, whether you have a significant other in your life or not, spend some time on YOU!

➡ Here's 5 of my favourite ways to practice self-love and compassion

💕 TREAT YOURSELF LIKE A FRIEND
Ever told yourself that you're not good enough? You wouldn't speak to a friend this way so why
lower your standards for yourself!
It's time to say goodbye to your inner critic and show yourself some of this love too!

💕 TAKE YOURSELF ON A DATE
Give yourself the same love and attention you would give other people by dating yourself!
Great date ideas include a coffee outing, a theatre trip, a spa day, a long walk. Do whatever brings you joy!

💕 REST AND RESTORE
The daily grind is tough. Give yourself time to do the things you love, be with people you love and take a break alone to simply be.

💕 PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Start your day by writing down something you are grateful for. This trains your brain to think in a positive way and sets you up for the day with a positive mindset.

💕 TRY SOMETHING NEW
Stepping outside your comfort zone probably feels like the least loving thing you could do for yourself but it's amazingly empowering to achieve something you never thought would be possible.

Which one of these will you be putting into action today? 💖
