There are so many reasons to be passionate about turning down the volume on noise, but it all comes down to this:
Protect Your Hearing, Protect Your Health!

Why do we care so much about unwanted noise? In the short term, noise causes stress (a well-established fact), and stress is hazardous to our health.

In the long term, noise causes hearing loss—and hearing loss itself is detrimental to our health and well-being. A growing body of research links hearing loss with social isolation, depression, an increased risk of falls, and even the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.

There’s so much to gain by working together to create a quieter more peaceful world. Our health depends on it!

Changing mindsets
Let’s make ear and hearing care a reality for all

“Hearing loss has often been referred to as an “invisible disability”, not just because of the lack of visible symptoms, but because it has long been stigmatized in communities and ignored by policy-makers.”
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus - WHO Director-General

World Hearing Day 2024 will focus on overcoming the challenges posed by societal misperceptions and stigmatizing mindsets through awareness-raising and information-sharing, targeted at the public and health care providers.

"I just didn't even know the process of what it was going to be like. She put me in the hearing test booth and sort of played around with all these things on my head and when the sound comes through, you have to push the button: I was almost sort of playing games with myself. 'Can you hear that? Can you not?'"

Ear and hearing care for all!
Let’s make it a reality

World Hearing Day 2023 will highlight the importance of integrating ear and hearing care within primary care, as an essential component of universal health coverage

Ear and hearing problems are among the most common problems encountered in the community.
Over 60% of these can be identified and addressed at the primary level of care.
Integration of ear and hearing care into primary care services is possible through training and capacity building at this level.
Such integration will benefit people and help countries move towards the goal of universal health coverage.

Aarti completed a masterclass in assessment and rehabilitation of tinnitus and hyperacusis, including the specialist cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and coaching skills. So, supporting and counselling individuals and their families through the stages of hearing loss and tinnitus is a core part of her practice.

Tinnitus explained
Tinnitus is the perception of any sound that comes from inside your body or brain rather than an outside source. If you have tinnitus you may be experiencing a ringing, buzzing, roaring or hissing sound in your ears or in your head.

Tinnitus is very common – so you are not alone.
Many people experience temporary tinnitus, which means it usually disappears after a few hours or days. It can mostly be heard when you are in a quiet environment with no other sound. Some common causes of temporary tinnitus are
- Exposure to loud noise
- Ear infections
- Wax build up

Tinnitus is generally associated with your emotional status and stress. You may develop tinnitus after a life changing, emotional or stressful event.

This can affect your day to day life, activities, concentration, sleep and overall wellbeing, resulting in you feeling anxious, stressed or even depressed. If you are one of these individuals, don’t despair! There are many ways in which The Art of Hearing can help you manage your tinnitus.

Expert, personalised recommendations for customised earplugs that suit your hearing levels and your needs!

There are a range of over-the-counter sponge and silicone ear plugs available for swimming, surfing and sleeping. However, the comfort, fit and hygiene of these will vary depending on the size of your ear canal and how often you re-use them.

At The Art of Hearing we custom make the following ear plugs:
1. For Swimmer's Ear
2. For Surfer's Ear
3. For Sleeping
4. For In-ear Headphones

Disadvantages of over the counter ear plugs
- Increased risk of ear pain and infection if used regularly as bacteria can collect in the sponge very easily
- Hurt your ears after some time of use if they do not fit properly
- Keeps falling out
- Don’t seem to give you the protection you need

If you experience any of the above, then custom made earplugs are the solution for you.

Who should have their hearing assessed?
The answer is simple – everyone.

Why should you test your hearing?
- Hearing loss just like other major chronic conditions, is greatly determined by social, nutritional and health factors, including genetic susceptibility. What was once deemed to be the inevitable effects of aging, hearing difficulties may in fact, in part, be due to an accumulation of lifestyle and health factors. A fully qualified audiologist can conduct an assessment and provide information about your individual hearing
- Having a ‘baseline’ hearing test early on in life (18-20 years of age) provides an Audiologist with a frame of reference for your hearing tests later in life and equips Audiologists to offer personalised advice on your ear care
- Modern daily living is increasing our exposure to noise. A hearing test can detect early signs of noise damage and help prevent further hearing impairment
- Hearing loss may be an early warning sign or red flag for other health conditions
- Research has proven that if you treat your hearing loss (with hearing devices) you reduce the risk of developing dementia

How often should you test your hearing?
Hearing loss occurs gradually, so it may take you quite a few years to notice that you have a hearing loss. Regular hearing tests can identify your hearing difficulties early on so that you can either prevent any further hearing loss or treat the hearing difficulty and reduce the risk of other health related conditions.

The production of ear wax is a completely natural process. Ear wax is produced in the outer part of your ear canal and is present mainly as a protective mechanism. It acts as a natural barrier that prevents dust and bacteria from entering the innermost parts of your ear.

Usually, your ears naturally expel ear wax and debris. However certain conditions accelerate the production of ear wax and it becomes difficult for your ears to expel the ear wax naturally. This can be caused by excess hair in the ear canal, small or narrow ear canals or some people simply produce excess ear wax naturally.

Too much ear wax can cause blockage of your ear and could result in earache, ringing and temporary hearing loss. Ear wax can be removed from your ears in two ways: micro suction and ear irrigation.

Read more: https://www.theartofhearing.co.uk/Services/Ear-hygiene-and-earwax-removal

Symptoms you may experience if your ears are blocked with wax
- Ear pain
- Sound distortion (your own voice sounds different)
- Feeling of stuffiness or fullness in the ear canal
- Persistent itching
- Unpleasant ear odour
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Discharge or liquid oozing from the ears
- Hearing difficulty
