One thing I never liked was the idea that therapists must never acknowledge their own challenges to their clients.

📌How can we build trust and feel safe being vulnerable when the other person offers nothing in return.
📌There is a sense of sense of safety in the relationship when we both invest personally.
📌I have stuffed up plenty (just ask my own kids 🫣)- it’s what I do after and how I do it that is where I see the change. As I alway say to my clients, I too am a work in progress… we all are

As a mother of a teen and working with teens, there are new words, sayings and actions all the time! Mewing, aura points, alpha and then they tell me- IYKYK 🤣🤪 Don’t even get me started on 🥬 fluffy hair and the ‘must have’ colognes/skin care products/tiktok purchases.

Apparently there is even an emoji now for one of the actions…. I can’t educate you, I can barely keep up myself, but chat to your teen, ask them to update you. It’s fascinating and scary how influential social media is!

From very early on we learn which parts of us are allowed to be, which parts are praised or rewarded and which parts are of us are not welcome.
Through IFS therapy, we learn that all parts of us are welcome. And when we allow ourselves, and our children, to feel all parts, we learn how to navigate those experiences

🧠 Anxiety can show up in many different forms

🧠It creates different parts in us that try take over and makes it harder to be who we want to be

🧠So important that we find ways to manage those parts so they don’t have to hijack our systems

Why do I prioritise working with parents in therapy?

📌You may have heard the term ‘conscious parenting’ and wondered what exactly that means?! And the passing on of generational trauma?!?

📌I used to work with children, doing play therapy only and the more experienced I got, the more I noticed that the biggest and quickest shifts occurred when I worked with the parents rather. It’s a harder sell as we’d prefer to send off our kids ‘to be helped’.

📌The truth is, we can’t help our kids if we aren’t able to deal with our stuff. And many times, their behaviour is a response to their environment- which we, as parents, have to address.

📌For parents, I know that our plates are full, and this isn’t to shame or blame- but it is our responsibility to our children to work through those painful experiences and our own challenges so that they don’t have to carry those burdens or be affects that. That is the best investment we can make into our children’s future.

Today’s thought: how similar are emotions and bodily functions?!

📌We ALL have them
📌Some are easier to ‘express’ than others
📌We can spend so much time and effort ‘keeping them in’
📌There might be a lot of fear around ‘letting go’
📌Sometimes it really hurts
📌Sometimes you can wait until you feel comfortable, sometimes you can’t
📌There may be an aftermath, but it soon clears
📌 Some pretend not to have them
📌No matter how organised/controlled you are, you can’t predict when or where they might pop up
📌If we keep it all bottled up, we get ill
📌Better out then in!

What a relief (pun intended 💨)

Oh this kid is so wise - he’s got more EQ that most of us adults. Also shoutout to his incredible parents/caregivers who helped grow and support this emotional awareness 👏

📌If you listen to one podcast this year, make it this one with - She is one of my favourite psychologists who talks about emotions and relationships in a relatable and helpful way.

📌I found myself nodding and agreeing to so many points: as a professional, as a mother, as a partner, as a daughter, as a friend and most importantly, towards myself.. really in all facets of my relationships! And pressing pause several times as I let a point ‘soak in’.

📌Also and crew at are so open and genuine that it’s makes for a really powerful listen.

📌Would love to hear your thoughts too
