National Institute for Health and Care Excellence

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence We are an independent body providing evidence based guidance to improve health and social care.

Since 1999, NICE have provided the NHS, and those who rely on it for their care, with an increasing range of advice on effective, good value healthcare, and have gained a reputation for rigour, independence and objectivity. In April 2013 NICE gained new responsibilities for providing guidance for those working in social care.

"The fear of that second stroke does not dictate my life anymore."

After his stroke, Peter lived with uncertainty. No one knew what caused it.

A small implantable cardiac monitor detected atrial fibrillation – the hidden cause. It gave him the answers he needed. Peter got the right treatment and his life back.

"My 3-year-old said, 'You're happy.' I did not realise I'd disappeared."

For years, Ammaarah was just surviving with type 1 diabetes - always reacting, never in control.

Today, she’s thriving. A hybrid closed loop device monitors her glucose and adjusts insulin automatically. It’s given her the freedom to be fully present with her children and meant her first full night’s sleep in years.

Read Ammaarah's story and discover how NICE is supporting faster, fairer rollout of high-impact healthtech: https://indepth.nice.org.uk/AmmaarahsJourney/index.html

New treatment option for menopausal hot flushes recommended for use on the NHS, with up to 500,000 potentially eligible.

NICE has recommended fezolinetant (veoza) for moderate to severe hot flushes and night sweats for those whom HRT is not suitable.

For Amelia and Peter, their son Rufus's first hours were critical. Born at high risk of infection, he needed antibiotics urgently. But standard treatment carried a hidden danger: Rufus had a genetic variant that could cause permanent hearing loss from a common antibiotic.

A rapid genetic test changed everything. Within minutes, nurses identified the risk and switched to a safer alternative. Standard tests take days.

Today, Rufus is a healthy, thriving baby who passed his latest hearing test with flying colours.

Behind every statistic is a family like Rufus's.

✨With NICE's support, this rapid test is being piloted across 14 NHS neonatal units.

Ammaarah spent years with type 1 diabetes dictating her life. Then she got a hybrid closed loop device.

The technology monitors blood sugar and automatically adjusts insulin delivery. For Ammaarah, it meant her first full night's sleep in years and the freedom to be present with her children.

For developers of this revolutionary tech, our positive recommendation brought with it credibility, funding and a clear pathway to reach patients across the NHS. For people like Ammaarah, it changed lives.

If you’re developing a technology that can deliver real impact, NICE can help.

New NICE guidance could prevent around 17,000 deaths over three years, and free up ÂŁ560 million for NHS reinvestment.

From today, people with type 2 diabetes should be offered SGLT2 inhibitors (known as 'flozins') alongside metformin from the start of treatment, rather than later in their care journey.

These medicines do more than manage blood sugar. They protect the heart and kidneys, particularly important given heart disease is the leading cause of death in people with type 2 diabetes.

Twice-yearly infusion that offers hope of normal kidney function for nearly 12,000 people living with lupus nephritis has been recommended by NICE in final guidance.

Clinical trials showed 46% of patients achieved normal or near-normal kidney function, compared with 33% on existing treatment alone.
