Cold or Hot Compress? Knowing the Difference Matters!

Cold compresses can calm irritation, ease swelling, and bring quick relief but sometimes heat is what your eyes really need. Using the right one at the right time makes all the difference for comfort and eye health.

Cold Compress:

-Great for reducing puffiness, swelling, or redness around the eyes (like with allergies).
-Helps ease irritation from conditions such as allergic conjunctivitis or episcleritis.

Warm Compress:

-Recommended for blepharitis (anterior or posterior), often linked to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
-Relieves dry, gritty, or itchy eyes by restoring healthy oil flow in the tear film.
-Supports healing of styes, helping them shrink and drain naturally.

Remember: cold calms, heat heals! If you are unsure which is right for your situation, check in with one of our specialists today - 020 7636 6080/07562 691243.

We recently enjoyed some in house training at our Dry Eye Clinic, building on the latest findings from the newly published TFOS DEWS3 report. We are always striving to stay at the forefront of Dry Eye care and we found this training to be very insightful.

A heartfelt thank you to Lalit from for highlighting new drops available and to Charlie & Lisa from , for their insight into biomarker testing during the session.

Many people rely on eye drops to relieve Dry Eye symptoms — whether for occasional irritation or as part of daily care. To help you get the most out of your drops, here are some simple tips that can make a real difference in their comfort and effectiveness.

Eye Drop Tips for Maximum Comfort:

•Chill them (if suitable) — Storing your drops in the fridge can give a soothing, cooling sensation when applied. Just be sure to check the label or instructions first to confirm they’re safe to refrigerate.

•Check expiry date — Always make sure your drops are within their expiry date before use.

•One drop at a time — Applying more than one drop at once often wastes product, as one drop can wash the other away. If you need another drop, leave a short gap before applying it.

•Space them out — Use your drops regularly throughout the day instead of all at once. Spreading them out helps keep your eyes consistently hydrated and can improve symptom relief.

If your Dry Eye symptoms persist or don’t improve, contact us. We’ll help you find the cause and recommend the right treatment to ease your discomfort.

Protect Your Eyes This Summer ☀️

With summer in full swing, increased exposure to sunlight, air pollutants, and airborne debris can lead to eye irritation. For individuals with Dry Eye or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), this can be especially problematic. These conditions often result in reduced tear production or poor tear quality, making it difficult for the eyes to flush out irritants and stay properly lubricated—further exacerbating symptoms.

To help protect your eyes, consider wearing protective eyewear such as glasses or sunglasses, especially in areas with high pollution. Additionally, using lubricating drops, especially when returning from the outdoors, can help remove irritants and keep your eyes hydrated.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of Dry Eye or suspect you may have it, the Dry Eye Centre can help identify the underlying cause and provide tailored treatment options.

What Are Styes?

Styes are painful, localised swellings that develop either on the surface of the eyelid or inside it. They commonly appear near the base of an eyelash or around the oil-producing glands of the eye.

Styes are often the result of blocked glands, particularly the meibomian glands. If left untreated, they may lead to long-term scarring or glandular damage.

Recommended Home Care:

•Apply warm compresses to reduce swelling
•Take over-the-counter pain relief as needed
•Keep the affected eye clean throughout the healing process
•Seek help if you feel unwell or the swelling spreads into your cheek

Important:

Do not attempt to pop or squeeze the stye, as this can spread the infection to surrounding glands and potentially worsen the condition.

If you experience frequent styes or have underlying conditions such as Dry Eye, we encourage you to contact us using the details below. Our team can help identify appropriate treatment options to relieve your symptoms and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Are you experiencing dry, irritated eyes? You may be dealing with either Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) or chronic Dry Eye disease. While these conditions present with similar symptoms, such as discomfort, redness, and a gritty sensation, it’s crucial to differentiate between the two.

MGD is primarily caused by a disruption in the function of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oily layer of your tear film. When these glands become blocked or dysfunctional, the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to irritation.

On the other hand, chronic Dry Eye is typically the result of inadequate tear production by the lacrimal glands, leaving the eyes insufficiently lubricated.

Accurate diagnosis is essential to ensure you receive the most effective treatment for your specific condition. At The Dry Eye Centre, we specialise in identifying the root cause of your symptoms and developing personalised treatment plans to restore comfort and eye health.

Let us help you see and feel better — starting with the right diagnosis.

Are your Dye Eye symptoms worse at night?

As the weather becomes warmer, you may notice an increase in discomfort or irritation caused by Dry Eye, particularly during the night. Here are some practical tips to help manage and relieve your symptoms:

Keep Your Eyes Hydrated:
Maintaining hydration supports overall eye health and promotes a stable tear film. Using drops frequently at regular intervals during the day can prevent a sudden drop in moisture in the eyes. Ensure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day too!

Use a Humidifier:
Increasing moisture in the air—especially in your bedroom—can help reduce nighttime Dry Eye symptoms. A humidifier is ideal, but placing a bowl of water near an open window can also add some humidity.

Limit Screen Time in the Evening: Switching away from digital devices earlier on in the evening can really help how dry your eyes feel when you sleep.
Excessive screen use in the daytime can strain your eyes and worsen Dry Eye overall. Take regular breaks, blink often, and position your screen slightly below eye level to reduce strain.

Additional Tips:

Consider changing your eyewear: If you wear contact lenses, try switching to glasses earlier in the evening.

Maintain clean bedding: Washing pillowcases and sheets regularly helps eliminate allergens such as dust and pet dander that may irritate your eyes.

If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms, we encourage you to book an appointment at our clinic for further evaluation and personalised care. To book an appointment today, contact us on 020 7636 6080/07562 691243

🔹Avoid high heating temperatures
🔹Use humidifiers in colder and dry months
🔹Wear eye protection in the cold, windy and allergy seasons.
🔹Take allergy medication
🔹Avoid getting sick and using over the counter cold medicine, which can worsen Dry Eye.

Seasonal changes can be difficult on the eyes. Be conscious of how changing weather affects your vision. Protect your eyes from the outside, provide moisture to your interior surroundings, and prevent contact with allergens if you are sensitive to them.
