Neck pain. What can I do to help myself? What causes it and how to prevent it from reoccurring?

One of the more common causes of neck pain is a cervical facet joint inflammation. People normally experience the pain in the morning, which comes up for no apparent reason. The neck feels stiff and pain gets provoked with movements of the head.

First of all, do not worry. Facet joint inflammation is quite common and normally resolves within 4-6 week. You can take some anti-inflammatory medication and cool the area to reduce the pain. Many people are worried that moving the neck would make things worse, however encouraging the neck mobility despite the pain can actually speed up the recovery.

Low back pain. When should I worry?

One in four people are experiencing low back pain (LBP) and most of the time it is self-limiting. However, LBP can be a sign of serious health conditions requiring urgent medical care. If you have any of the following symptoms, seek for medical care urgently (NICE, 2016).

1. Severe leg weakness, which is progressively getting worse.
2. Inability to pass urine or urinary/fecal incontinence.
3. Absent or abnormal sensations (e.g. tingling, numbness) in the saddle region.
4. History of major trauma or minor trauma with osteoporosis (decreased bone density).
5. Severe, unremitting pain even when resting (e.g. lying in the bed).
