People have asked me what's the role of a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) with COVID-19 patients in critical care and beyond.
Let me explain with reference to the diagram below. The process of this disease causes coughing, breathing difficulties and puts strain on the lungs, larynx and vocal cords. These anatomical components are not only important for breathing but also for talking and swallowing effectively. Many lose appetite and sense of smell and quickly become deconditioned.
The role of SLTs has specialised to address issues not only of speech and language, but many functions of the throat. We often employ visual methods to aid our diagnostic evaluation, although with these patients we rely on clinical examination alone. Patients who require breathing support either via a face mask, endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube will have an alteration to the laryngeal physiology which can cause temporary damage. Our role is to provide therapeutic interventions to either help the system work again or compensate in another way.
For our patients this means being able to use their voice to speak to loved ones, finding the words to explain their pain, enjoying the pleasure of drink or food again - all these add quality to life after

Lets think about late talkers.

DID YOU KNOW.....???

"Late talkers" are toddlers who have typical comprehension but a limited number of spoken words.

Research shows that 70-80% of late talkers will catch up to their peers.

Sounds like pretty good odds, right?

Wrong.

This means 20-30% of late talkers will NOT catch up to their peers. They will have persistent issues with language and literacy that will affect them throughout their lives.

There is no way for us to know if a child will fall into that 70-80%, or that 20-30%. This is the purpose of EARLY INTERVENTION - to catch that 20-30% of children who will NOT catch up on their own.
