James Ross Hunter Youth Support 'Sip n Talk' Project

Creating Safe Spaces for Community Connection in Lewisham

The James Ross Hunter Youth Support (JRHYS) 'Sip n Talk' project serves as a vital community platform that brings residents together in a safe and welcoming environment to connect, share experiences, and collectively address the impact of community safety and well-being challenges in th

e borough of Lewisham. Our Mission

Through consistent workshops and annual events, the 'Sip n Talk' platform raises awareness and promotes positive social values whilst fostering meaningful connections across our diverse community. The project is designed to create a firm and stable foundation where conversations can flourish, highlighting the social aspects of working together with unified voices and demonstrating visual actions of care within a secure space. The 'WFC' Wellbeing Framework

At the heart of our approach lies the innovative WFC wellbeing framework - an original James Ross Hunter Youth Support model focusing on three core elements:

Waking Moments - Building awareness of emotions as we begin each day

Following Through - Recognising realistic views and options whilst identifying thoughts and challenges as they arise

Closures- Creating meaningful endings and transitions

This framework brings heightened emotional awareness through an ongoing platform of support, complemented by planned collaborative activities and festivities that strengthen bonds between children, parents, and the wider community. Community Impact and Inclusiveness

The 'Sip n Talk' project is open to all members of the community, actively embracing diversities and creating pathways for everyone to participate. We work closely with other community partners through signposting and referral systems, ensuring comprehensive support networks are available to those who need them. Our particular focus on supporting victims of violence through enhanced well-being and healing activities connects us with other safer community networking groups, creating a robust support ecosystem across Lewisham. Addressing Community Development

The project directly addresses the effects of development and sustainable growth within our community, providing a vital space where local voices can be heard and growth can be accomplished through joint collaborative efforts. By taking a visual stance to demonstrate what more can be done to reduce violence and implement genuine care for victims of violence, we facilitate ongoing community conversations that enlighten and unify our collective commitment to making our local area a place of safety that welcomes all. Through the 'Sip n Talk' platform, we continue to demonstrate that care, conversation, and community connection are powerful tools for creating positive change and building a safer, more supportive Lewisham for everyone. On Thursday 30 April, your Ladywell Labour team attended the Ladywell Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team Panel meeting to ensure your voices are being heard and acted on.

We continue to work closely with local police and partners to keep our community safe. The agreed ward priorities remain focused on reducing robbery around Lewisham Hospital and Ladywell Fields, tackling drug-related anti-social behaviour in and around Lewisham Park including Malling, Keswick Court and Malyons Road, and addressing anti-social behaviour in our shared open spaces.

We know these are real concerns for residents, and it is important that enforcement is visible and consistent. Recent figures show 127 recorded offences, including violence, anti-social behaviour and theft, which is why sustained action remains critical.

There has also been positive progress. A recent drugs operation resulted in over 40 stop and searches with positive outcomes. A new neighbourhood watch has been set up in the Lewisham Park Towers area, and there are ongoing patrols in Ladywell Fields, including plain clothes officers working alongside local schools. During National Stalking Awareness Week, officers distributed 100 personal safety alarms as part of efforts to tackle violence against women and girls.

We also raised concerns about accessibility issues with the Met Engage platform, as well as reports of vandalism to parking machines and speeding on Vicars Hill and Chudleigh Road.

As your Labour team, we are committed to being visible, responsive and rooted in the community. We will continue to push for stronger action where it is needed and work alongside residents to make Ladywell safer for everyone.

If there are issues in your area, please do reach out or attend future meetings. Your voice matters.

Collette was at yesterday's event in London and it was the first time she had seen Prem Rawat in person. This was what she had to say afterwards:

"This is my first time seeing Prem Rawat, and it really resonated with my journey. I have moved from a place of losing my son to violence, 5 years after coming here from Jamaica, to then actually engaging with the community to empower the youth and the victims of violence. I help them to analyse, accept, grow and come back to the appreciation of life!

It’s been a wonderful, wonderful afternoon. I’m so happy to be here. I couldn’t have been in any other place!"

The replay of the livestream will be available very soon. Stay tuned!
