James Ross Hunter Youth Support 'Sip n Talk' Project

Creating Safe Spaces for Community Connection in Lewisham

The James Ross Hunter Youth Support (JRHYS) 'Sip n Talk' project serves as a vital community platform that brings residents together in a safe and welcoming environment to connect, share experiences, and collectively address the impact of community safety and well-being challenges in the borough of Lewisham. Our Mission

Through consistent workshops and annual events, the 'Sip n Talk' platform raises awareness and promotes positive social values whilst fostering meaningful connections across our diverse community. The project is designed to create a firm and stable foundation where conversations can flourish, highlighting the social aspects of working together with unified voices and demonstrating visual actions of care within a secure space. The 'WFC' Wellbeing Framework

At the heart of our approach lies the innovative WFC wellbeing framework - an original James Ross Hunter Youth Support model focusing on three core elements:

Waking Moments - Building awareness of emotions as we begin each day

Following Through - Recognising realistic views and options whilst identifying thoughts and challenges as they arise

Closures- Creating meaningful endings and transitions

This framework brings heightened emotional awareness through an ongoing platform of support, complemented by planned collaborative activities and festivities that strengthen bonds between children, parents, and the wider community. Community Impact and Inclusiveness

The 'Sip n Talk' project is open to all members of the community, actively embracing diversities and creating pathways for everyone to participate. We work closely with other community partners through signposting and referral systems, ensuring comprehensive support networks are available to those who need them. Our particular focus on supporting victims of violence through enhanced well-being and healing activities connects us with other safer community networking groups, creating a robust support ecosystem across Lewisham. Addressing Community Development

The project directly addresses the effects of development and sustainable growth within our community, providing a vital space where local voices can be heard and growth can be accomplished through joint collaborative efforts. By taking a visual stance to demonstrate what more can be done to reduce violence and implement genuine care for victims of violence, we facilitate ongoing community conversations that enlighten and unify our collective commitment to making our local area a place of safety that welcomes all. Through the 'Sip n Talk' platform, we continue to demonstrate that care, conversation, and community connection are powerful tools for creating positive change and building a safer, more supportive Lewisham for everyone. with Last Sunday, we were at our May Ital Community Garden for their open day. It was a great day that really highlighted the meaning of community for us. The weather even held up for the most part too!

In a city that is renowned for its anonymity, it's hard to feel a real sense of community. It takes time to build and some may even be here for years without having found a space where they feel like they can belong or just be themselves -- and be appreciated for it. Community gardens don't just grow food either, they grow connections too. Connection between people or plants and also between both people and plants.

It was such a lovely turn out at the Ital Community Garden. We might not have known everyone's name when we first arrived, but by the end of the day we sure did. It's something as easy as weeding a planting bed or filling up the watering cans that brings people together in these spaces.

It's Ray turning over the soil to help with getting rid of persisting bindweed, Comfort bringing food scraps to the compost pile, Darren asking if we need kneelers, Ariel showing us a nifty weeding technique, Carmen serving us up a delicious home cooked curry or Pat sharing how she's been a vegan for three years and never felt better for it.

These are just some of the friendly people that come to the Ital Community Garden regularly and bond over building a budding community garden together. On any given open day, you'll find them there along with founder Valerie warmly welcoming everyone onto the site and buzzing with new ideas. Her mum is sweetly helping to keep everything in order in the background too.

Everyone is always welcome to join them there and get stuck in with gardening tasks on Wednesdays and Sundays, 9.30am-4pm. On June 19, they'll be celebrating their first-year anniversary, so be sure to give them a follow so you can join in on the festivities then.
