We are delighted to share that Jose Bascones, Lead Outpatient Physiotherapist is our BEE Award Winner.
The BEE (Be Exceptional Every Day) award gives our patients the opportunity to celebrate, and acknowledge exceptional staff.
Jose shared these reflections with us on why he became a physio. ‘When I was 8 years old, I got quite ill, later, I had a revelation, that my being ill allowed me to gain a level of empathy which I can use to help others that are unwell.’
Jose started his physio journey in his home town, Barcelona. After returning from working during summer, He joined his class at a later date than the rest of students and the only seat left in the room was next to someone, who he later became great friends with. They got chatting, and she told Jose about her sister becoming a physiotherapist, this was the first time he had ever heard of it, as it wasn’t well known in Barcelona at the time. After chatting with her sister about it, immediately, he told me, he, realised that it was his calling.
'The way I approach treatment is with the understanding that the body has all the mechanisms and capacity to heal itself, and it’s my job to support/facilitate that healing process, and let the body do what the body is capable of doing, repair, heal and grow. Our job is not to “fix” people. If someone says “I’m going to fix you” I would be careful, as it is not the physio that fixes you, it is the body that heals itself. The physio has to be tuned with the patient, listen to their story and feel the tissues to provide the best support and choose the best treatment modalities available for the healing to happen. But, ultimately, it’s the body that makes the change. It is often that I see patients creating a separation from the injured part and the rest of the body, as if it’s a different entity. For example, when a patient gets a joint injury, they often think of that part of the body as somehow foreign, my job is to allow them to see it as part of them, and help them to come to terms with the trauma caused, reconnect with their whole body and help them remember how to use that part in accordance with the rest of their body. Then, the healing begins.’
‘I truly believe that we need to be humble enough to know that we don’t know everything, and to remember that we are at service to others. We dedicate our time, knowledge and skills, to the best of our capacity at any given time, to help those patients who come asking for help/advice. So, I am committed and dedicated to my work, for my patients; and the Lister hospital has provided the space and equipment needed to provide the care that I do, and I am very grateful for this.’
