🧬 1. Biological Explanations

🧠 Neural Mechanisms
• The limbic system (especially the amygdala) is linked to aggression.
• Damage or dysfunction can increase aggressive behaviour.
• Evidence: Raul Delgado (1967) – stimulating areas of the brain in animals produced aggressive responses.

🧪 Hormonal Mechanisms
• Testosterone is associated with increased aggression.
• Research: Dabbs found higher testosterone levels in violent offenders.

🧬 Genetics
• MAOA gene (“warrior gene”) linked to aggressive behaviour.
• Study: Brunner – Dutch family with MAOA mutation showed aggressive behaviour.

✔️ Strength: Scientific, objective evidence
❌ Limitation: Biological determinism

👶 2. Social Learning Theory (SLT)

Key Research: Albert Bandura

🧸 Bobo Doll Study (1961)
• Children observed aggressive role models.
• They imitated aggressive behaviour.
• Shows aggression is learned through:
• Observation
• Imitation
• Vicarious reinforcement

✔️ Strength: Laboratory evidence
❌ Limitation: May lack real-life validity

🧠 3. Cognitive & Situational Explanations

De-individuation
• Loss of self-awareness in groups increases aggression.
• Study: Philip Zimbardo (1969) – hooded participants gave more shocks.

Frustration–Aggression Hypothesis
• Proposed by John Dollard et al. (1939).
• Aggression occurs when goals are blocked.
• Berkowitz later added the role of environmental cues.

✔️ Strength: Explains situational aggression
❌ Limitation: Not all frustration leads to aggression
