Even before this baby came home from the post natal ward his experienced breastfeeding mother knew something was wrong and asked me to come over that evening to assess.
I shared some information and tips with her to get much more comfortable latching. We also talked about repairing ni**le damage.
I gave her a plan A, plan B and plan C, ensuring she knew she didn't need to keep going , damaging her ni**les and dreading every feed.
I shared with her that her baby has some clear signs of tongue tie:
The stretchy, visible frenulum under his tongue comes very close to his gum line.
He has "cobblestone lips" - blisters cover all his lips from gripping onto the breast compensating for limited tongue mobility.
He has a high dome in the centre of his pallete probably formed by his limited tongue movement in utero.
The damage on the face of his mothers ni**le is indicative of tongue tie also.
I was able to share refer her for NHS tongue tie clinic and give her a plan of ongoing support while she waited for the appointment.
The family also asked for some information on private tongue tie division which I was happy to share.
The family messaged the next morning:
"Thank you Sally!
Really lovely to meet you too and feeling positive we can sort this..."
And a few days later:
""...We've had some great progress with the feeding pain instantly easing up! Hooray Silver cups also helping lots with healing. Thank you so much for your help"
