This is not just a “healthy plate”, this is a strategic plate.

Every single element is there for a reason.

🌿 Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi help support the gut microbiome, which plays a critical role in immune function

🌿 Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli provide sulforaphane, studied for its role in detoxification pathways

🌿 Fibre from beans and greens feeds beneficial gut bacteria

🌿Protein supports muscle mass, metabolism, and recovery

When it comes to cancer support, we are not just thinking about calories, we are thinking about, the gut microbiome, inflammation, detoxification, immune surveillance, and cellular health.

This is how food becomes more than food.
It becomes part of the plan.

Beetroot is one of the most underrated foods in cancer nutrition.

Betalains, the compounds responsible for that extraordinary deep red colour, have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and cancer cell inhibiting properties in research. Beetroot also supports nitric oxide production, improves blood flow, supports liver detoxification pathways and feeds beneficial gut bacteria.

When your body is going through treatment, or recovering from it, this really matters.

This is not just about what you are eating, it’s about how your body is functioning at a cellular level.

Simple additions like this can support energy, recovery, and overall resilience alongside treatment.

Always individualise, especially if you are under active treatment or on medication.

I juice mine fresh. No sugar, or additives, just pure root vegetable medicine, with a squeeze of lemon juice to help with iron absorption.

If you are going through treatment or recovery and looking for simple daily habits that support your body, this is one of the easiest places to start.

Save this, and share it with someone who might need it.

It’s been a full-on week…

This week alone I’ve supported clients with:

🌿Stage 4 breast cancer

🌿Stage 4 ovarian cancer with spread to the liver and lungs

🌿Stage 4 pancreatic cancer

🌿A**l cancer

🌿Multiple sclerosis

🌿Autoimmune disease

🌿Thyroid and complex gut issues

🌿Severe digestive symptoms with no clear answers

🌿A male client with osteoporosis, sinus and gut issues

No 2 cases are ever the same, even when diagnoses are similar, the underlying drivers are often completely different.

I’ve also had 3 comprehensive stool analysis results returned this week.

These tests go far beyond what’s typically available on the NHS, looking at:

• Commensal (beneficial) bacteria balance
• Opportunistic bacteria
• Pathogenic bacteria
• Yeast and fungal overgrowth (e.g. Candida)
• Parasites and parasitic activity
• Viral markers (where present)
• Microbial diversity and overall microbiome balance

Digestive function
🌿Pancreatic elastase (enzyme output)
🌿Fat digestion (steatocrit, long-chain fatty acids)
🌿Protein digestion markers
🌿Carbohydrate digestion markers
Absorption markers
• Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including butyrate
• Beta-glucuronidase activity (linked to oestrogen recycling)

Inflammatory markers
🌿Calprotectin
🌿Lysozyme
🌿Eosinophil protein X

Immune function
🌿Secretory IgA (sIgA)

Gut barrier integrity
🌿Zonulin (where included depending on panel)

• Occult blood (hidden blood in stool)

• pH of the stool environment

• Metabolic byproducts of gut bacteria

• Antibiotic sensitivity and resistance (for certain pathogens)
• Natural antimicrobial sensitivity (where applicable)

As expected, each client’s results tell a completely different story.

Some require GP-led intervention, including antibiotics, where appropriate.
Others we support with targeted nutritional and natural antimicrobial strategies.

One result has flagged occult blood, which has been followed up promptly with a GP referral.

This is what root-cause medicine looks like, no guessing, no one-size-fits-all, and not “everything is normal”.

Alongside this, I’m continuing to review clients advanced hormone testing, including DUTCH testing, looking at:
Oestrogen and progesterone levels Testosterone levels
• Oestrogen metabolism and detoxification pathways
• Cortisol patterns and stress response
• Melatonin and sleep regulation

A**lysing how your hormones are processed in the body matters, particularly when we’re looking at long-term health risks and hormone-related cancers.

I work alongside the NHS, not against it, but I ask the questions that don’t always get asked. I look at the patterns that often get missed, and I help my clients make sense of what is actually happening in their body.

If you’ve been told “everything is normal” but you don’t feel normal, or you want a more personalised, evidence-based approach to your health, you’re very welcome to book a free 20-minute call or send me a message.

No pressure, at all, just a conversation.

Oh, and my week isn’t over yet!

This weekend I’ll be cooking and photographing 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and 2 dinners, alongside writing an article for a 3 page feature in a national magazine.

It’s out in June, so keep your eyes peeled 👀

Why You Are Gaining Weight During Chemo, And Why It Is Not Your Fault | Part 2 (What Actually Helps)

Part 1 covered protein, blood sugar and gentle movement.

Part 2 goes deeper.

Fibre for your gut microbiome. Omega-3s to reduce the inflammatory environment driving muscle wasting, and the cortisol cycle, because chronic stress during treatment is not just emotional, it’s biological, and it’s directly driving fat storage and immune suppression.

This series exists because thousands of you told me that nobody had ever explained any of this to you. You deserved this conversation from day one.
If you want personalised support alongside your treatment, link in bio for a free 20-minute discovery call.

Keep your eyes on this profile. Something significant is coming very soon that will benefit everyone going through cancer. Follow so you do not miss it.

Weight gain during treatment is not a lack of willpower, it’s biology.

Steroids, hormone therapies, and chemotherapy change how your body uses energy, stores fat, and protects itself, but here’s what is often missed…

Your metabolism is not “broken”, your body is adapting.

With the right support, you can work with it, not against it.

This is where nutrition matters far more than people are led to believe. Not extremes or restriction, but targeted, evidence-based choices that protect muscle, stabilise blood sugar, and support your energy at a cellular level.

How you nourish your body during and after treatment influences not just weight, but recovery, strength, and how you feel day to day.

Part 2 is coming next, and it is one you will not want to miss.

If this resonates, save it, or share it with someone who needs to hear that this is not their fault.

511 women commented on a post asking if they had gained weight during chemo. The answers broke my heart.

20lbs. 30lbs. 40lbs. Almost every single one of them felt like it was their fault.

It is not!

Here is what is actually happening in your body, and why understanding it is the first step to doing something about it.

A little moment to share…

Bella magazine has featured me for the 3rd time, and I could not be more grateful. 🎉

Over the years, I’ve also been invited to share my work across platforms including The Times, HELLO magazine, Healthline, GB News, iNews, and more, and I have appeared on BBC TV. Each time the message has been the same, evidence-based, practical nutrition that makes a real difference to real people.

This week I’m in the Bella bumper issue, 2 magazines in 1, featured in their A-Z guide to Simple Secrets for Weight Loss. You will find me under A for Air Your Appetite, where I shared how something as simple as opening your windows, taking your morning coffee outside and getting natural light can help regulate your hunger hormones. Nature’s version of portion control.

What I’m really excited about is what is coming next.

The Bella journalist has asked me to contribute recipes, food photos and expert nutrition content for a dedicated 3-page feature in the June issue. I’ll be sharing more in-depth nutrition guidance, recipes, and real food strategies that people can actually use in everyday life.

People deserve more than generic advice, they deserve answers that make sense.

My next chapter in the media will be focused on bringing a nutritional therapy and functional medicine approach to cancer into the spotlight.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support, share, and trust my work!

If you spot the feature, I’d love to know what you think.

3 women, 3 cancers, 3 completely different stories, but 1 approach that looks at all of it.

My name is Helen Perks and I’m a Registered Nutritional Therapist with a BSc in Nutritional Medicine, Functional and Lifestyle Medicine Practitioner, trained by the Institute for Functional Medicine, and I specialise in cancer nutrition. I’ve been in clinical practice for over 13 years and I trained in a Systems Approach to Cancer under one of the world’s leading integrative oncologists. I have 100% success rate with GP and consultant letters requesting tests and referrals.

I wanted to share what I actually do, because most people, understandably, have no idea.

This is not about telling cancer patients what to eat, it’s about asking why the cancer developed in the body it did. What was happening in that person’s life, health history, environment, gut, hormones and immune system, and what we can do to change that terrain alongside their oncology treatment.

Let me show you what that looks like in practice, with 3 cases, fully anonymised.

👩 Woman 1. Stage 4 ER+ Breast Cancer.

When I look at a case like this, I’m not just thinking about food. I’m thinking about oestrogen metabolism, specifically, how is her body processing and eliminating oestrogen? Is it going down the protective 2-OH pathway, or the damaging 4-OH pathway? Is her gut microbiome reactivating oestrogen and recirculating it back into her bloodstream?

Her risk factors include elevated 4-OH oestrogen metabolites, high beta-glucuronidase activity in the gut, xenoestrogen exposure from plastics and personal care products, and the impact of enforced menopause from her treatment on her sleep, bone density and metabolic health.

She is also on medications with very specific drug interactions, which means every supplement I consider has to be screened against her treatment protocol before I recommend it. Nothing is guesswork, everything is evidence-based.

Her RESPECT® prescription, the personalised plan I create for every client using my trademarked health and wellbeing model, covers her eating habits, sleep hygiene, physical movement, her internal and external environment, her gut microbiome community and targeted testing and supplementation.
It looks completely different to the plans of the other 2 women below, because she is a completely different person.

👩 Woman 2. A**l Cancer. Post-treatment.

Her risk factors are different entirely. She tested positive for HPV-16, the highest risk strain, but the question I ask is not just whether she has HPV, it is why her immune system was unable to clear it before it progressed to cancer.

When I look at her wider picture, a significant part of the answer lies in her stress load. This woman carries an enormous amount of personal and family responsibility. The cumulative weight of that, sustained over many years, has kept her cortisol levels chronically elevated.

This matters clinically, not just personally, because chronically elevated cortisol directly suppresses NK cells, the natural killer cells whose job it is to identify and destroy HPV-infected cells before they become cancerous. When cortisol is high month after month, year after year, that immune surveillance is quietly and steadily undermined.

Her RESPECT® prescription has to work within the reality of her life. It has to be budget-conscious, time-realistic and tailored to someone who is rebuilding her immune system while carrying significant family responsibilities. Her supplement protocol is completely different to Woman number 1 because her cancer, her treatment history and her medications are completely different.

There is no one-size-fits-all, there never has been.

👩 Woman 3 . A rare form of Hodgkin Lymphoma.

When I heard this woman’s history, a clear pattern emerged.

From childhood, this young woman had experienced a repeated inability to mount a proper immune defence. A succession of different infections over the years, including glandular fever, caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, alongside a number of other infections across different systems. Each one a sign that her immune surveillance was struggling, and then, lymphoma.

The risk factors here are a pattern of her immune system struggling, which had been present for years before the diagnosis. Her immune system had never been able to keep these infections fully suppressed, and the lymphoma may have been the result of that cumulative vulnerability.

What struck me particularly was that despite this history, her Vitamin D had never been tested. Vitamin D is not just a vitamin, it is a steroid hormone with receptors in every immune cell in the body. It directly regulates NK cell function, the very cells she needed to keep infections under control and support the immune system that preceded her diagnosis. A deficiency could have been quietly suppressing her immune system for years.

Her RESPECT® prescription would look completely different again. Her plan has to fit her life, her social world, her anxiety around upcoming scans, her budget, and the very specific post-treatment window she is in, where she needs immune modulation, not stimulation.

This is what functional medicine applied to cancer looks like.

It’s not alternative, it’s not instead of conventional treatment, it’s evidence-based, integrative and always alongside the oncology team.

It asks the questions that busy oncology appointments do not always have time for. It looks at the whole person, their history, their environment, their lifestyle, their test results, their medications and their life.

It also creates a plan that is completely personal, because cancer is not a one-size-fits-all diagnosis, and nutrition and lifestyle support should not be either.

My RESPECT® model, gives every client a framework that addresses all 7 areas of their health. For each of these 3 women, every single pillar of that framework looks different, because they are different people, have different cancers, at different stages, on different treatments, living completely different lives.

That is the point, that is the work.

If you or someone you love is going through cancer and would like to understand how this approach might help, I offer a free 20-minute discovery call. No obligation at all, just a conversation.
