A new idea I’ve had for a Friday afternoon is to introduce Friday Feels ✨!
Where you guys get to ask me your burning questions about Pilates. These can be queries on exercises you don’t quite understand, personal experiences and how I can help, questions about my membership, classes, sessions or workshops. There is no wrong answer and for me its about sharing and educating - so ask away!
This week we have a fab one from one of the workshop attendees.
She asked ‘Given the v close mind-body connection, do you have any tips on dealing with the mental side of back injuries / when you get niggles?’
I LOVED answering this question as I could go down many avenues to answer it. Do watch this video for the full answer, but in brief:
1️⃣ PREVENTION RATHER THAN CURE (ALWAYS)
If we are supporting and maintaining our body we can manage and sometimes prevent these flare-ups from happening. For anyone with an injury, once it’s ‘fixed’ and goes off your radar, this is dangerous territory. Injuries will never go away, they are your Achilles heel and will pop up when you least want them to. This can be from stress from lack of maintenance, but if you keep up your ‘insurance’ exercises, chances are this will happen less than you think.
2️⃣ NIGGLES
They are here as warning signs for your body. Don’t ignore them, listen to them and pay attention to what they are saying to you. Chances are you will catch yourself before you go past the point of little return. Know that when these appear you need to do X, Y and Z to get you back on track. This stops you going down that rabbit hole and spiralling.
3️⃣ BREATHE
We are all human, things happen. Don’t beat yourself up for a little relapse if it does happen. Use it as a learning opportunity and an experience to teach you something about your body you didn’t know. Be kind to yourself. It’s also very likely your body is telling you to slow down - so listen to your body!
For me these warning signs come when I haven’t been doing Pilates and my body is very stressed. Pilates is 100% my insurance Policy and without it I can very easily find myself sliding down that spiral.
Happy Weekend everyone
