Jaw and facial deformities are deformities that develop in the form of the lower jaw growing more than the upper jaw during growth and development, or vice versa, the lower jaw falling behind the upper jaw as growth retardation, resulting in asymmetry of the lower jaw due to the growth centers not developing equally.
A history of trauma, mouth breathing and some genetic factors cause deformities.
Jaw deformities can cause facial deformities, as well as problems in functions such as eating, speaking and breathing, which adversely affect the patient's quality of life. In addition, it can affect the psychosocial status of the patient in the community. Only dental crowding can be corrected with orthodontic treatment. In these deformities, surgery is mandatory since there is a problem of incorrect positioning of the jawbones.
Correction of deformities is carried out in cooperation with oral and maxillofacial surgeon and orthodontist. Treatment is usually started with orthodontic treatment (preparatory brace treatment for surgery) in order to correct the crowding of the teeth. After 6 months to 1 year of orthodontic treatment, surgery is planned as a single or double chin, depending on the severity of the deformity and which jaw it is in. With the "surgery first" approach, which is another approach that has become popular especially in recent years, brace treatment is done after the surgery. Thus, the total time can be reduced and the psychological status and motivation of the patients can be increased by surgically correcting their profile images. For these surgeries, the patients must be over 18 years old.
