Dr Matthew Jones en route back home from Burkina Faso after a month running training courses at several remote sites.

Medicine wasn’t always the plan for Matthew, first studying History at Cambridge and then law in London. Following this he trained and qualified as a corporate and banking lawyer, working in London, Moscow and Muscat (Oman) for two and a half years.

However, having never felt truly satisfied by this career he decided to take a break to consider his options, spending 12 months studying Arabic in the Middle East and then a year working as a nursing auxiliary to gain insight into hospital life. Having decided medicine was for him he spent 4 years at Newcastle University before qualifying as a doctor.

Having qualified Matthew worked for 3 years as a junior doctor in the NHS, and since, 2 months in Nepal, a year in South Sudan, and 2 years in Francophone West Africa with CCI. Along the way he has added qualifications in Tropical Medicine and Public Health

Over the last couple of years CCI has launched an e-Internship Programme. In light of the upcoming Conference, we thought we would share an article we recently published with about the potential for e-Internships within medical education: 'Remote Medicine in a Virtual Environment'.

Come to our talk on Monday at the WEM22 Conference to find out more. We look forward to meeting everyone!

"The formation of a medical student’s professional identity extends beyond the acquisition of medical theory".

"Experience in a variety of diverse settings is needed to develop the communication skills essential for patient-centred care and to enhance a student’s ability to adapt to challenging circumstances".

"However, despite their importance it is often difficult to identify opportunities outside of university curricula that encourage a more holistic approach to healthcare".

"[E-internships] can support students to become ‘work ready’ through exposure to the non-clinical aspects of medical service provision, as well as expanding their vision of what is possible within a medical career".

"We are hopeful our experiences will encourage others to establish similar programs".

Medical student Megan Roby and GP Marcus Stevens explore the potential impact of e-internships for medical education.
