🚫🌾 Coeliac Disease: what is cross-contact?
For those with coeliac disease, avoiding cross-contact (also previously referred to as cross contamination) is crucial. Just one crumb can trigger symptoms, and cause gut damage, for those with Coeliac Disease.
Let's break it down with an example:
⠀
🍕 Imagine ordering a gluten-free pizza. The dough is made from gluten-free flour, the toppings are carefully selected and are gluten free, BUT it's baked in the same pizza oven as regular (non-GF) pizzas. This is cross-contact, as the gluten free pizza will have come into contact with the non-GF pizza, either by touching it directly, or by being placed in the same area as the non-GF pizza (where there will be crumbs / traces of flour)!
⠀
🕵️♂️ Did you know? Oats can also be sneaky culprits of cross-contact. They're frequently contaminated by gluten-containing grains during processing. So, when reaching for oats, make sure they're certified gluten free.
