A Fleur de Lis (FDL) abdominoplasty and a traditional tummy tuck address different anatomical problems.
A standard tummy tuck primarily tightens the lower abdomen. For some patients particularly after significant weight loss — excess skin may also exist vertically above the belly button through the mid-section. In these cases, a tummy tuck alone may not fully correct the contour.
A FDL allows tightening both horizontally and vertically, improving waist definition and removing more central excess skin.
The trade-off is a vertical scar, which for many patients is worthwhile in exchange for improved shape and contour.
The decision isn’t about choosing a “bigger” procedure — it’s about choosing the right operation for your body.

After losing 95kg, this patient was left with significant excess skin across the abdomen, arms, and thighs - something many people aren’t prepared for after weight loss. Surgery isn’t about perfection. It’s about restoring balance, improving contour, and helping the body reflect the hard work that's been done.

Following a FDL tummy tuck, an arm lift, and thigh lift, this result shows what can be achieved with a carefully planned, tailored approach. Every journey is different and so is every surgical plan.
If you’re considering skin removal after weight loss, the most important step is understanding what’s safe, realistic, and right for you.

Surgery is one day.
Recovery and healing take much longer.
One of the most important parts of a good surgical outcome isn’t just the operation itself it’s understanding the process that follows.
Swelling takes time to settle.
Scars take months to mature.
Recovery requires patience and commitment.
My role is to perform surgery carefully and safely.
Your role is to allow your body the time it needs to heal.

After significant weight loss, excess skin and laxity around the abdomen can remain, even with exercise and a stable weight. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is designed to remove this excess skin, restore abdominal contour, and improve comfort, posture, and the way clothes fit.

In this video, Mr Fitzgerald O’Connor explains who a tummy tuck may be suitable for, what the procedure addresses, and why careful patient selection is essential to achieving safe, considered results.

As with all procedures, treatment is tailored to the individual, with a strong focus on safety, function, and natural-looking outcomes.

After significant weight loss, excess abdominal skin can remain in different areas. This is why there isn’t a single approach that suits everyone.

A standard tummy tuck and a fleur de lis (FDL) tummy tuck address different patterns of skin laxity. Careful assessment is essential to determine which procedure is most appropriate, taking into account skin distribution, overall health, scarring and realistic expectations.

A personalised, consultant-led approach helps ensure safe surgery and long-term results that support both comfort and function.

Scarring is an important part of the conversation when considering an arm lift after significant weight loss.

Arm lift scars are carefully planned and positioned to allow effective removal of excess skin while supporting comfort, movement and long-term results. While scars can appear more noticeable in the early stages of healing, this is a normal part of the process and they typically soften and fade over time.

Clear expectations, thoughtful surgical planning, and good aftercare all play a key role in scar healing and overall outcomes.

After losing a significant amount of weight, Rachel was left with excess skin on her arms that couldn’t be improved through exercise alone. This can be a common concern after major weight loss, often causing discomfort, restricted movement and loss of confidence.

Rachel came to me to explore whether an arm lift could help. From the initial consultation, the focus was on understanding her journey, setting clear and realistic expectations, and planning surgery carefully with safety and long-term outcomes in mind.

Her arm lift was designed to address the excess skin while prioritising function, comfort, and thoughtful scar placement. As Rachel shares, the improvement in day-to-day comfort and confidence has been significant, and I’m pleased to see her recovering well.

Every patient’s journey is different, which is why treatment is always personalised and consultant-led from start to finish.

Significant weight loss can be life-changing, but for some people, excess skin remains long after weight has stabilised. This can affect comfort, movement, clothing fit, and day-to-day confidence.

Post–weight loss skin removal surgery is not about achieving perfection, but about restoring function, comfort, and balance. Options may include procedures such as tummy tuck, fleur de lis abdominoplasty or arm lift, depending on the individual’s needs and anatomy.

There is no single solution that suits everyone. Careful assessment, realistic expectations, and a personalised surgical plan are essential to achieving safe and considered outcomes.
