Hey everyone, just wanted to share a little thought with you all: strive for excellence, not approval. What's the difference, you might ask? Well, let me explain. When you're striving for excellence, you're creating something based on your own standards of quality. It's not about trying to please others or seeking their approval. Instead, it's about having confidence in your own abilities and making a decision for yourself that this is good.

On the other hand, seeking approval means creating something with the hopes that it will be approved by others. The problem with this approach is that there will always be people who don't approve of your work. When you're constantly seeking approval, you'll never be satisfied because you'll always be questioning whether it's good enough or not.

So, whether you're an artist or pursuing any other creative endeavor, remember that excellence comes from within. It's about creating something that you're proud of and that meets your own standards of quality. Don't worry about pleasing everyone else or conforming to the masses. Instead, focus on creating something truly unique and special that speaks to your own vision and passion. That's where the true value lies.

Anxiety can cause us to wear a mask, both literally and metaphorically. But did you know that this coping mechanism can actually be detrimental to our mental health? As an anxiety specialist, I often see clients who feel like they don't know who they are without it, identifying themselves solely through their work and achievements. The detrimental effect of “Wearing a Mask” include perfectionism, social anxiety, and imposter syndrome, which are a direct result of tying our self-worth to external factors. This tendency to tie one's self-worth to external factors starts in childhood and can persist into adulthood, leading individuals to feel like they need to wear a mask to hide their true selves.
Recognising the impact of childhood emotional neglect on our sense of self-identity is an important step in breaking free from the need to wear a mask. By developing a healthy sense of self-identity and learning to value ourselves for who we are, rather than what we do or how successful we are, we can break free from the cycle of perfectionism and anxiety that can keep us stuck in our masks.

Are you tired of feeling like you have to wear a mask, both figuratively and literally, in the workplace? As an anxiety specialist, I've seen many clients who feel like they don't know who they are without it, identifying themselves solely through their work and achievements. But the truth is, tying your self-worth to external factors can be detrimental to your mental health. It can lead to perfectionism, social anxiety, and imposter syndrome.

Many of my clients who feel the need to wear a mask come from emotionally distant or emotionally neglectful families. They may have been subjected to emotional pressure to conform to expectations or left feeling invisible. As a result, they struggle to develop a healthy sense of self-identity, and the need to wear a mask persists into adulthood.

But there's good news! It's possible to break free from the need to wear a mask. By taking the time to truly understand yourself and your values, you can start to build a healthy self-identity that isn't tied to external factors. This means you can start to be your authentic self, without the need to constantly adapt to your environment or the people around you.

Step 1: Write down everything that's causing your anxiety. Who's involved? What are you thinking about yourself?⁠

Step 2: Draw a line down the middle of a page. On one side, write down the FACTS of the situation. On the other side, write down the STORY you're telling yourself.⁠

By separating the facts from the story, you can identify the real cause of your anxiety and gain an objective perspective. With time and practice, you can reduce your anxiety and enjoy a more peaceful and present life.⁠
