Newark to Host the Knife Angel

Newark is preparing to welcome one of the UK’s most powerful and thought‑provoking public artworks: the Knife Angel, a 27‑ft sculpture created from over 100,000 seized knives and weapons.

From April 21 to May 20, Newark will become the first town in Nottinghamshire to host this nationally significant installation as part of the UK National Youth Anti‑Violence Tour.

Crafted by the British Ironwork Centre, the Knife Angel took over two years to complete, with police forces across the UK supplying more than 200,000 confiscated blades, twice the number required.

Many of the knives forming the wings carry the names of victims, alongside personal messages written by grieving families, making the sculpture not only a work of art but a profound memorial.

This matters, it’s a moment for Newark to stand together. Knife crime affects communities across the country, large and small, and the Knife Angel’s arrival is a powerful reminder of the importance of prevention, education, and community unity.

This initiative has been made possible through a strong partnership between Newark and Sherwood District Council, We Are Newark and You Can Do Sport Academy with more organisations joining daily.

Local leaders have emphasised the importance of this moment:

Paul Taylor, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Community Relations, shared:

“The Knife Angel is awe‑inspiring… it carries an important message about the dangers of knife crime and the fear and harm it causes.”

Emma Holden, Project Manager at We Are Newark, added:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our town… a chance to engage our community, spark important conversations, and create a lasting legacy for Newark.”

Natalia Postlethwaite, Director of You Can Do Sport, said:
“The response from our local community has been overwhelmingly positive… we now have a growing team of people working to bring ambitious plans to life.”

The Knife Angel is now the UK’s most‑travelled monument, visiting more than 50 towns and cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and more, reaching millions with its anti‑violence message.

Now, it’s Newark’s turn.

The finalised town‑centre location will be shared shortly.

This is an excellent video from The Traveller Movement showing challenges faced by the Irish Traveller and Romani Communities here in Britain. I worked in North Kensington for many years and visited Stable Way as a Dementia Advisor - so these images are familiar to me.

This is an important video for authorities here in Newark and for residents, particular those living in Tolney Lane.

This urgent film delves into the unacceptable conditions and locations of local authority Traveller sites across the country, with a searing case study on th...

Incredible to read there is a 2k waiting list for Irish classes!

There's been a significant surge in interest in learning the Irish language in Britain, according to those involved in teaching it. One of the largest online education providers in the UK, City Lit, says that Irish is its second fastest growing course.
