Your body responds to breathing exercises more powerfully than it does to chocolate.

Sarah, a marketing director in her 50's who was stress eating every afternoon around 3pm like clockwork couldn't believe it when I taught her this simple exercise.

She'd tried everything - keeping healthy snacks, removing trigger foods, setting reminders to "be mindful."
Nothing worked.

Then I taught her what's really happening in her body when she's overwhelmed:
When you're stressed, your body goes into "emergency mode" - heart racing, feeling wound up, ready to fight or run. Y
our brain desperately wants to switch into "calm mode" - relaxed, peaceful, able to think clearly.

Food works because eating naturally helps your body switch from emergency mode to calm mode.
But here's the game-changer: specific breathing patterns do this faster and more effectively.
I taught Sarah the "Double Exhale Trick":

Breathe in naturally through your nose (usually 3-4 counts)
Breathe out through your mouth for twice as long (6-8 counts)
Keep going for 2-3 minutes
Focus on making the out-breath longer than the in-breath

This works because long out-breaths are like hitting a "calm down" button in your body.
You're literally giving your body what it's seeking through food, but without the food.

Sarah tried this the next time she felt the 3pm stress eating urge building.
Within 90 seconds, the craving disappeared completely.
Not pushed down - actually gone.
Her body got what it actually needed.
She's now been stress-eating-free for 8 months, not through willpower, but through giving her body the right tools.

When you hit that "f*** it" moment and demolish a packet of biscuits, your brain isn't betraying you.
It's actually trying to save you.

Humour me ......
Think of your brain like a mobile phone battery. All day long, you're using mental energy - making decisions, solving problems, managing difficult people. By evening, your rational thinking part is running on 5% battery.
But your emotional, survival-focused brain? That stays fully charged all day. When your rational brain runs out of juice, your emotional brain takes over. And its only job is to keep you alive and get energy fast.

That's why you suddenly crave chocolate, bread, or anything sugary when you're stressed. Your brain is literally trying to recharge itself using the fastest fuel available.

You're not weak.
You're not out of control.
Your brain is doing exactly what it's designed to do when it's mentally exhausted.

This is why willpower doesn't work at 9pm after a s**t day.
It's like trying to use your phone when the battery is dead - the tools just aren't available.
Understanding this changes everything.

In my third decade, I learned to help them connect with what they already know.

This is the difference between:

"I should work out" vs "I am someone who moves my body"

Three decades ago, we talked about calories in, calories out.

Today, I spend more time talking about inflammation than I do macronutrients.
Here's why
Chronic inflammation is the root cause of:

“Why can’t I just stick to anything?” Edelle asked me last week.
I could see the frustration on her face.

Here’s what I told her, and what I want you to understand too:
When you’re constantly switching between multiple new habits, your nervous system stays in fight-or-flight mode. Your brain interprets all that change as stress, even when the changes are “good” for you.

Result?
Elevated cortisol, disrupted sleep, increased cravings, and that feeling like you’re white-knuckling your way through life.
This is why the women who succeed long-term don’t try to change everything at once.
They give their nervous system what it craves: predictability and safety.
