Most women who reach out to me can’t remember the last time they woke up actually feeling okay, and when I ask them that directly, they just go quiet.

Not because they’ve given up, but because the version of themselves that wakes up puffy, crashes mid-afternoon, and needs something in the evening to get by has become so familiar that it no longer registers as a problem—it’s just become their normal😔

By Wednesday afternoon most women are hanging on by their fingernails and they don't actually know why.

That was exactly what Rachel said to me when we first started — she's 47, runs an HR department, is REALLY good at managing herself in every other area of her life, but when it came to her eating habits - no matter what she tried, the second half of the working week had become a s**tshow

Eating less and training harder is the most exhausting way to gain weight in midlife, and I've watched so many smart women resort to this for years.

It's the logical response — weight creeping, so you cut back and push harder, because that's what always worked before and it's what every app and magazine has ever told you to do.
And it works for about three weeks, and then it stops, and then it starts making things worse, and THEN you think it's your fault.
It isn't.
Eating less raises cortisol, raised cortisol in a menopausal body stores fat around the middle, training harder raises it further, throw in the family stuff and suddenly the woman doing everything right by every measure she was ever given is gaining weight, sleeping badly, crashing at mid-afternoon and standing in front of the fridge at bedtime wondering what WTF happened to her.

Here's what happened — your hormones changed, your metabolism changed, and the approach that worked really well for years just… stopped being the right one.

Happy International Women's Day 💪

I work with women every single day who are stronger than they think they are.
Not just physically — although watching them do something they never thought they could is one of the best parts

I'm talking about the ones who walk through the door when they really don't feel like it.
The ones juggling kids, work, ageing parents, hormones doing their own thing — and they still show up.
That's what strength actually looks like.
It's not always pretty.
It's not always a personal best.
Sometimes it's just getting yourself there.

Something shifted over the last few years and I'm guessing you can't quite put your finger on when it happened.

One year you were a bit more tired than usual — fair enough, life was full.
The next year the weight started creeping up so you did what any sensible woman does, you ate less and pushed harder.
Then the sleep started going, then the joints started grumbling, then the mood followed, and somewhere in the middle of all of that you quietly stopped expecting to feel well and just started "managing" instead.

You’re f****** exhausted but your mind won’t stop.

So you lie there.
Doing the maths on how many hours you’ve got left if you fall asleep right now.
Of course you don’t fall asleep which means tomorrow you’ll be running on empty.
Again.

And this is a stress response that’s been running on overdrive for so long your body has forgotten what off feels like.
