Summer yoga classes are continuing on zoom - Monday mornings & evenings. We hope to return to Long Ashton Village Hall in September, if Covid restrictions are fully lifted.
Using zoom to provide virtual classes during the past 12 months has been a rewarding experience, it is not the same as being in a live group setting, but it does have the huge advantage of allowing us to keep up with our practice in some semblance of community. It also reminds us that at the end of the day, all we really need is our mat and our breath and the knowledge that we are always connected to one another, whether we are in the same place or not.
As a teacher I also appreciate that zoom has allowed me to train and continue study with The Institute of Yoga Sports Science, which only ever would have been possible virtually. It has inspired my practice and teaching and I would like to be able to continue to offer zoom classes even when we make it back into the real world!

An update on the Village Hall; I’ve been notified that the Long Ashton Community Association trustees have decided that the Centre should remain closed until at least the end of March 2021. Our Yoga classes therefore will stay online for at least the next 3 months – weekly classes start again on Monday, 11 January 2021 (mornings 10.30am and evenings 7.45pm).

In the circumstances, I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to take part in a course designed to help yoga teachers make the adjustment to teaching online – this was provided by the The Institute of Yoga Sports Science (who have been teaching sports coaches and athletes online for a decade). This whole process has been inspirational, unbelievably we’ve now had nearly 6 months of classes and it’s been amazing to witness everyone’s growing confidence, both in dealing with the technical side and clearly enjoying the opportunity to experience a shared practice but in the comfort and safety of their own homes.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part, it feels like we’ve created our own little yoga community! If you haven’t joined us yet, please do think about it. The classes are not like ’live streamed’ classes - the way it works is yes, you can see and hear me, but importantly I can see you very well (on a large screen) and so much of the time I am watching rather than doing, so I can respond to class and individual needs. One comment I received was that it’s like having a one-to-one session in your own home! The session opens 15 minutes before class starts so there’s the opportunity for everyone to meet and chat, and also at the end we take time to come back together. If you’d like more information, please do get in touch.

Following the extraordinary events of the last few months, I'm very pleased to be able to offer 'virtual' yoga classes using Zoom. Just to be clear, these are classes in real time, where I can see you and you can see me and at times also the other class members. We can talk and interact – imagine you’re in a regular class, listening to me talk you through a practice and see me demonstrate, that’s what we’re trying to replicate, but you’re in the comfort and safety of your own homes. If you wish, you can also have a chat to each other at the end too!
Classes are on Mondays, mornings 10.30am and evenings 7.30pm.

Classes start again on Monday, 9 September. This is our Autumn Term, the first half is 7 weeks (9 Sept to 21 Oct) and the second half is 6 weeks (4 Nov to 9 Dec).

In our classes we practice 'Hatha' yoga and our aim in physical terms is simply either to maintain, or try and restore normal human movement. This involves putting our spine, hips, shoulders, feet and ankles through movements that an active person would require to meet their everyday needs.

The way in which we practice is at the heart of yoga - it engages the senses and requires our mental attention - for example, co-ordination of our breath with movement, how we're move through space, how we discriminate this feeling from that, how our breath changes when we do something, or how much effort we are putting into any movement.

If you'd like to know more or are interested in attending either of our classes please contact me:

Our Summer Term starts tomorrow and I'm looking forward to sharing Mondays with you all again, particularly as the weather gets warmer and the evenings get lighter! The emergence of new all around us is enlivening and our practice can help us make the most of the time of year where we naturally feel more energetic!

Yoga also teaches us about the willingness to be present, which isn't difficult, but sometimes remembering to be is. So a little yoga 'practice' for us all 🙂

Classes continue this Spring through to 23 May (no classes 2 May BH). The Summer Term is 13 June to 25 July.
I saw this lovely description recently: Attending a yoga class ticks so many boxes. It's like indulging in a massage, a trip to the osteopath, an exercise class, a counselling session, a stress relieving workshop and a confidence booster all in one!
Sounds good doesn't it; yoga certainly is uniquely accessible and adaptable, and once begun, can become a positive lifestyle habit, a habit that has been with me now for over 30 years!
