For over a thousand years, the Olympic Games were at the beating heart of ancient Greek society. First taking place in 776 BC, they showcased stunning feats of athleticism and deep religious reverence, but looked quite different to the Olympics we know today!

Here are 5 interesting facts about the ancient Olympic Games...

👨 Athletes competed naked! The only exception seems to be chariot racers, who wore white tunics.
🐎 Women couldn't compete directly. However, a number of remarkable women were declared Olympic champions in chariot racing, as the owners of the victorious horses.
🍃 Winners didn’t receive medals but were crowned with wreaths made from the leaves of Olympia’s sacred olive trees.
🕊️ Before each Games, the Olympic Truce was signed, halting all wars between the various city states for the competition's duration.
❌ The Games came to an end in 393 AD, when Emperor Theodosius I called for all ‘pagan’ festivals to be banned in favour of Christianity.

Today I'm thinking of my Grandfather, who died long before I was born, he was a marathon runner and had hopes of competing in the Olympics. Unfortunately, his health put a stop to his aims.

RIP H M Queen Elizabeth II

Lovely that the heavens greeted her with rainbows at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace.

After the shock and grief of HM The Queen's death, people are asking, "What happens next?".
Today, flags around the country are already flying at half-mast and books of condolence have been opened around the country and the Commonwealth.
Churches across England have been asked to toll their bells at noon, and gun salutes will be fired from Hyde Park, one for each year of the Queen’s life.
Both the House of Commons and the House of Lords will sit at 12pm to pay tribute to the Queen today in a special session of condolence.
King Charles III and the Queen Consort will return to London from Balmoral later.
The new King will make a televised address to the nation today and the Prime Minister, senior ministers and the Lord Mayor of London will attend a service in the Queen’s memory at St Paul’s at 6pm.

The release date for the 1921 census on Findmypast has been announced, it will be 6th January 2022.
Although originally planned for January it was thought that 2 lockdowns would cause a delay. Luckily it seems they have caught up.
There will be a charge to view each record but even so there is a chance that systems will crash on the first day.
