😁 Thinking about braces for your child? We know many parents are unsure about when (and whether) their child can be referred for braces, so here’s a quick guide to help make things clearer.
🦷 When can a child be referred?
Children can be referred for an orthodontic assessment once their adult teeth have started to come through, usually around age 10–12. Earlier referrals are sometimes appropriate, but not always necessary.
📊 What criteria are used?
NHS orthodontic treatment is based on the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This helps determine whether braces are needed for health reasons, not just appearance.
This includes issues such as:
• Severe crowding
• Prominent or “sticking out” teeth
• Significant bite problems
• Impacted teeth
• Problems affecting function, speech, or long‑term dental health
Cosmetic concerns alone don’t meet NHS criteria, but private options are sometimes available.
If your child meets the NHS referral criteria:
• We send a referral to an NHS orthodontic provider
• They will arrange an assessment
• If accepted, treatment is fully NHS-funded for under‑18s
If your child doesn’t meet NHS criteria, we can still discuss private orthodontic options with the option to refer to local providers, often offering more flexibility and shorter waiting times.
