"While it's long been known that ears (and noses) appear larger as we age, research in recent years has clarified that this is not due to true growth but is instead the result of gravity and cartilage degradation. Over time, the collagen and elastin in ear cartilage weaken, causing ears to elongate and sag slightly. The effect is subtle but noticeable in older adults."
